A Family Divided: Was He Right or Wrong?
In a tale that’s causing quite the stir, a 21-year-old man’s decision to take his ailing younger brother to the hospital without informing their parents has led to a fierce family feud. While he believed he was acting in his brother’s best interest, his parents saw it as a dangerous overstep. The brother, suffering from a progressive heart condition, had woken him up in the middle of the night, complaining of a sharp pain. Fearing the worst, he rushed him to the hospital, only to be met with his parents’ wrath upon their return. They accused him of being reckless, even suggesting he could have killed his brother. The internet is divided – was he a caring sibling or a reckless rule-breaker? Let’s see what people have to say about this contentious situation…

Sibling defends late-night hospital dash, questions family’s anger and exhaustion

“YTA. You played it off like a stubbed toe? Parents should decide!”

ESH but the AH is leaning heavy on your side.
1) You took care of your brother. Good.
2) You made medical decisions on his behalf rather than contacting his legal guardians who were sleeping down the hall. Bad.
3) You left a note, knowing those legal guardians wouldn’t see it for hours. Pretty bad.
4) You removed a minor from the home without permission from the legal guardians. Very Bad.
And if he had involved the legal guardian the next time his brother needed help there’s a very real chance he’d refuse to ask anyone for it. He specifically went to OP so his parents would not be involved.
In emergencies you don’t have time to get everyone up and on the same page- especially not when the person experiencing the emergency does not want everyone involved and will back pedal and be stressed out by you attempting to do so.
A minor who was experiencing a medical emergency but was too scared of his parents to go to his parents.
In two years time that minor will be an adult- and one who’d be well within his rights to never see his parents again (especially since he has heart issues and they- his parents specifically- stress him out. Not a good combo, that).
Good parents would be happy their adult child is a safe place for their minor child- someone their minor will confide in and ask for help from even if they don’t want them involved.
Then again, good parents don’t make such a production about their child being ill that he doesn’t trust them and would rather make the conscious decision to risk death than ask them for help.
