More often than not nowadays , films are greenlit for a sequel before they even hit theaters. Whether we like it or not, we’re living in the age of remakes and reboots .
But it wasn’t always that way. In fact, I’ve managed to find 10+ great movies that never had a sequel but definitely should have. Take a look and see what you think!
*Bridesmaids*
Bridesmaids is one of the funniest female ensemble comedies of the Millenium. With so many characters to choose from, the possibilities for sequels are endless.
Over the past decade, Kristen Wiig has been approached multiple times to return and has always refused.
*The Fifth Element*
The fact that there are six Die Hard sequels and we’ve still yet to see the next chapter in The Fifth Element irks me.
Aren’t you at all curious about what Korben and Leelou have been up to after all of these years? I know I am.
*The Simpsons Movie*
As hard as it is to imagine, The Simpsons Movie was released nearly 15 years ago.
With the series slowly approaching its final episodes, a sequel would be a fantastic way to tie a proverbial ribbon on what has been an unprecedented and historic legacy.
*Beetlejuice*
Here’s my pitch: 10 years after Adam and Barbara cross over, a grown-up Lydia is feeling lost and alone as her only daughter prepares to leave for college.
In a moment of desperation, she calls out to Beetlejuice who in-turn kidnaps Lydia’s daughter and pulls her into The Neitherworld.
What do you think?
*Inside Out*
I for one just refuse to believe that Bing-Bong is dead. He just has to be alive somewhere in the deepest recesses of Riley’s mind!
Maybe Joy and the gang could organize a rescue mission to save Bing-Bong and tie in an overarching metaphor about rediscovering lost youth?
*Inception*
This one is just too easy. The top never stops spinning; Cobb’s children never get any older.
It’s clear (to me at least) that he is still very much in a dream at the end of Inception . Would he choose a life of true misery or one of fabricated happiness?
*Monsters Inc.*
Trolls will say that Monsters Inc. already has a sequel and they’d be wrong. Monsters University is a prequel .
Besides, I’m far more interested in hearing the story of what happens after Sully walks through Boo’s reconstructed door. Not what happened while he and Mike were away at college.
*The Goonies*
What makes The Goonies such a magical film to watch is its ability to convey such an incredible sense of adventure; that it lay just around the corner, waiting to be discovered.
Maybe we find out what’s happening with the second generation of Goonies this time around?
*South Park: Bigger, Longer, And Uncut*
The South Park movie came along while the series was still in its infancy. Since then, the show has come leaps and bounds as far as the overall quality of the animation is concerned, as well as the topical humor.
A South Park pandemic-themed movie would be epic.
*Pulp Fiction*
With great risk comes great reward. Tarantino may not make a habit out of making sequels, but its’ not as if he hasn’t done it before.
Look at Kill Bill 2 ; it was arguably even better than the first. Maybe lightning will strike twice?
*S****h*
Where did Mickey and the Pikeys run off to; what ended up happening to Tommy and Turkish? Did Bricktop’s son ever crawl out of the woodwork seeking revenge?
These are the questions a S****h sequel could easily answer.
*Old School*
Don’t tell me that you’ve had your fill of Frank the Tank’s antics; how could you?
The comedic power of Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell, and Luke Wilson is staggering. There’s no doubt in my mind that they’ve got what it takes to pull off a sequel.
*Wedding Crashers*
I don’t know if Wedding Crashers is the most quotable movie in the past 20 years, but it’s easily in the Top 5.
Aside from maybe Swingers , this is Vince Vaughn’s greatest film performance of his entire career. I would give anything for Wedding Crashers 2 to be made real.
*Hereditary*
I think most people would agree that there are more bad horror movie sequels than you could shake a stick at. Why not give us one that we actually want and deserve?
Keep your Freddy flicks and give me a Hereditary sequel!
*Office Space*
Sure, Office Space is a classic. But it never gave us the kind of closure that audiences were hoping for.
I personally think a sequel where Peter runs for political office would be an interesting take on things — how about you?
