“Absolutely not the a**hole. No parent has a right to our children’s minds. We can work to be a safe place for our children, so that hopefully we earn their trust and they can come to us with things. Similar situation. 50/50 custody. My ex spouse decided on a whim that our son wasn’t entitled to privacy in his cell phone messages. We already monitor app usage/and have adult content blocked. But outside of that, I respect his privacy. I operate on the principle that I’m not going to comment on how she parents (as long as it’s not abuse) and I’m going to parent regardless of her opinion. So when my son asked to keep his phone at my house for a while, I said yes. She was angry. But I’ve chosen to be a safe place for my kids. Once you start acting entitled to your children’s private thoughts, there’s a shelf life on having a healthy relationship with them.”
