To be clear, you would not be the a**hole for not inviting Luke to your personal Christmas, but I don’t think you can host the big family Christmas and disinvite him if that’s the one he usually goes to. When you adopted the son that he fathered, you knew he was uncomfortable with the situation and that it was going to create a rift. That does not mean it was wrong to go ahead with the adoption, but it does mean that you can’t isolate Luke from the rest of the family when he’s clearly having an emotional response to seeing a child he fathered periodically. I think you all should just not be in the rotation to host family Christmases. That way you can go but keep an eye on Luke and your son and leave if it gets uncomfortable. I just think there are no easy answers here. Usually, it will be fine for you to keep distant from Luke, but shared family events are different. I don’t think it’s a good resolution to just kick Luke out. Many people choose to do closed adoptions because they know they can’t handle seeing their bio kid out and about. Luke doesn’t have that option, but it’s not fair to exclude him from family traditions as a result of his not being able to handle seeing his bio kid. He at least deserves more conversation.
