Working the night shift isn’t for the faint of heart.
It’s dark, lonely, and you end up feeling really tired. You may also encounter some creepy things that only go bump in the night.
Get out your favorite blankie because it’s time to learn about these 19 creepy things that happened when people were on the night shift.
The church

This Redditor used to clean a church alone late at night. While it sounds like a safe place to work, considering it’s a church and all, they experienced a broken piano playing music by itself one night.
When they checked on this, they heard a large bang from the attic closet behind them.
The ten-story drop

“I was working in a 35 story high rise. I was returning some computer tapes like I did nightly. I was exhausted and I could barely stay awake. As I approached the elevator, I noticed the door was open. I was happy that I didn’t need to wait and started walking faster until I realized there was no elevator car present and it was a ten-story drop.” – u/hbombjr
The child
This Redditor worked as a night shift custodian at a middle school. One night, after they cleaned alone, they turned off the lights and saw the dark silhouette of what looked like a child run from across the end of the hallway from left to right…
The bowling alley

“I used to work at a bowling alley, i had finished closing and I had just turned off all the lights and was about to leave. Suddenly one of the lanes turns on (the only way they turn on is a switch in the back) so I turned on the lane lights and started walking back to turn it off, I was just about to go behind the lanes past the curtain when it shut off again. We didn’t have cameras there but I really wish we did because my boss didn’t believe me.” – u/No_Organization_6343
The pen

Something strange happened when this Redditor worked at a hotel overnight in the laundry room.
They were on the third floor at 2 a.m. sliding an invoice under the door for the front desk when a pen flew past their face and hit the door. When they checked the hallway after, it was completely silent.
The museum

“Used to be Exec Director of a family science museum. We once hosted a human cadaver type exhibit (similar to Body Worlds)… Three times during the exhibit run, in the middle of the night, the alarm company calls me to say motion sensors are going off in that exhibit hall, but no exterior window or door sensors are tripped. Three times I had to get out of bed, drive to the museum, and walk the exhibit floor amongst the posed cadavers and specimens with a flashlight to confirm all was well. Never found anything amiss…” – u/rasurec
The shadow

When this Redditor was on their break outside during summer, they looked toward the federal building to see a person completely in shadow walking their way.
They had never felt such malevolence from a person who was just walking. After they went inside, no one passed at all in the next 10 minutes.
The pizza delivery
“Used to deliver pizza to the worst areas of my college town until 2 am nightly. The worst part was a massive mental hospital I’d have to deliver large orders to. Some of the patients were allowed to roam free, some would stare at me through locked doors.” – u/sabertooth66
The taxi

If you ever wondered what taxi cab drivers do during the night when they’re on break, this is it: they sleep. One night, though, a taxi cab driver forgot to lock his doors and woke up to find someone sitting in the back of their cab.
The chemical plant

“I worked in a chemical plant at night in the lab. I ran tests on the products from the day shift and would correct formulas is the product wasn’t in spec. The only other employee on night was a guard. One night I kept seeing something out of the corner of my eye. I would swear someone was watching me. Later the night guard told me that it was the ghost of a dead employee from about 20 years ago. The employee was killed when he fell off of a overhead walk way ! I swear I was just creeped out the rest of the time I worked there.” – u/Chattman2
The mental patient
Working night shifts as a psychiatric nurse isn’t easy! Just ask this Redditor who once encountered a tall man in all black.
When she asked what he needed, he said that he wasn’t safe and needed to go to an inpatient psych ward to escape the people who were after him.
Since the hospital was full and there were no beds for him, he turned his head slowly to look her in the eye.

He said if the threat to his own life wasn’t considered an emergency, “I bet they’d care if I stabbed someone else.”
The retirement home

“A few of us (work in a fairly well know retirement home in a city) in the kitchen over the years swear they heard the screams and voices of the deceased in our dining room which was right next to our kitchen. To this day, we still hear the voices.” – u/BigE1263
Mr. Bones

When this Redditor was working a new job at a prison cell, they encountered a guy who was out of his cell and going to the bathroom around 2 a.m.
Since this wasn’t allowed, the officer checked the bathroom, searched everywhere, but found nothing.
When they told one of their coworkers about what happened, the first thing they asked was, “was he tall and skinny with long dreads?”
When they answered yes, they were told, “That’s Mr. Bones. He killed himself a few years ago but he still hangs around.” He still gets goosebumps thinking about it.
The gas station

“Worked at a gas station and a customer came in and said ‘There’s a guy walking around outside with a rifle.’ That was a tense evening, but dude never came inside, so it’s all good.” – u/CuriousRelish
The baby spiders
When this mover restocked trucks with supplies, his vision started to get fuzzy. He was tired, so he rubbed his eyes. His forearm felt wet, but he figured it was sweat.
When he finally looked down at his arm, he saw hundreds of crushed baby spiders. His vision wasn’t fuzzy; baby spiders were crawling on his eyelashes!
The stalker

When this Redditor worked the night shift at Taco Bell, she and her coworkers received a call from a man.
He said, “I know there are only girls in there. I’ve been watching for a while. Don’t come out, I’ll be waiting for you.” While they hoped it was a prank call, it wasn’t.
They looked out into the lobby and saw a tall man, wearing a blue collared shirt, standing at the door facing the other way.

“We were terrified. We called the cops and we saw the cops speak to him. They had asked him to leave. We never saw that man again.”
