For some, the monster-in-law stereotype may be getting a bit old, while for others, it’s still very much a reality.
While many people don’t expect the relationship between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law to be perfect, there’s usually some hope that they won’t totally be at each other’s throats.
However, in some cases such as this one, tensions can’t help but run high when one MIL goes too far.
Wedding dresses are vital parts of many weddings.
Even though the wedding day is supposed to be primarily about the couple joining in matrimony, selecting the perfect dress is usually high on the priority list.
In fact, it’s often not just important to the future bride, but to other members of the family as well.
Occasionally, there are multiple people who want to call the shots for the wedding.
Even though the day and the dress is for the bride and groom, others in the family sometimes feel the need to step in and take charge. Whether it’s mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, mothers-in-law or other members of the family, they assume they known best and therefore take it upon themselves to call the shots on everything.
If everyone demands to be in charge, things can fall apart very quickly.
Disrespect and lack of communication can make some families crumble before they even begin. Weddings can often test boundaries in unexpected ways.
One future bride certainly felt like her boundaries were being ignored.
In the middle of her 4 month engagement, one 26-year-old bride took to Reddit’s popular r/AmITheAsshole page to plead her case.
As she explained, her future mother-in-law was getting on her last nerve by continually insisting she choose the wedding dress. She even required the bride to get her special approval before selecting any dress.
Despite increasing tension, the bride made an effort to include her future mother-in-law.
However, those efforts weren’t without their headaches. As the bride explained,
“Before I went shopping I called [the MIL] to ask if she wanted to come but she started making excuses about how busy she was with my sister in law. I went shopping with my mom and I was able to find a really nice dress although it cost me a little over what I saved up for, but it was worth it.”
She even made expensive modifications for the dress.
Relieved to have found her dream dress, the bride shared, “I made some changes to it and it was perfect, it arrived to my apartment at the end of the week, I made sure it was stored in a safe place so it doesn’t get ruined.”
However, things quickly took a turn for the worst when she returned one day to discover both her fiancé and her dress were gone .
As it turns out, her MIL and SIL were playing dress-up with her wedding dress.
The bride discovered that her fiancé had taken the dress to his mother’s place, and then went grocery shopping before returning home with her beloved gown stuck in the back of their car with the bags of groceries on top of it .
Not only was her dress buried beneath grocery bags, but it was also damaged.
“Its zipper was broken and the dress itself (fabric) was stretched out…the straps were almost loose,” the bride-to-be recalled of her ruined gown.

That was when her fiancé finally admitted that both his mom and sister “took turns to try it on.”
Apparently, the people involved felt it wasn’t a big deal that the dress was ruined.
In a phone call to her MIL, the furious bride told her off for trying on the dress.
“I was absolutely livid,” she recalled. “[MIL] told me she did nothing wrong and that I was making a big deal out of it.”
Eventually, the MIL conceded enough to offer to at least replace the zipper that she had busted on the dress.
But understandably, the bride refused. The dress was so stretched out, it needed complete replacing.
So she demanded that her MIL pay to buy her a new one.
But her MIL wasn’t about to shell out any money for a brand new dress.
“She refused and said that I probably wasn’t happy with my dress choice and wanted to her to pay so I could get a new one,” the bride recalled . “I yelled at her for trying it on and ruining it, that she and my fiancé were responsible for ruining my dress so they should pay for a new one.”
At the end of her post, the bride explained that while she’s of course furious about her ruined gown, there’s more to be upset about here.
In fact, a lot of her anger is coming from knowing someone else wore her dress before she formally got to on her wedding day.
She’s even considering postponing the wedding now, and just needs Reddit to tell her whether she’s the asshole for demanding her MIL replace her beloved dress.
The people of Reddit have spoken.
Users have declared that she is definitely not asshole in this situation, and expressed concern for this impending marriage.
As one person wrote,
“Girl do you hear yourself?? Your fiancé took your wedding dress without permission and allowed multiple people to try it on! Do you understand how disrespectful and inappropriate that is? You not only have a bad mother in law problem, you have a HUGE fiancé problem. Needless to say, I’d be doing more than postponing.”
Others slammed the woman’s in-laws-to-be for even thinking trying on her dress would be a good idea.
“I’m gonna bet this isn’t the first display of boundary destroying behavior. I can’t even imagine trying someone else’s wedding dress on for ‘funsies’,” this person wrote.
Someone else added, “It’s so grossly inappropriate I can’t imagine what sort of people they are – and the financé has very poor judgement in taking it without asking, at the very least.”
