Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has just announced that he is officially ending his presidential campaign for the 2020 Democratic nomination, CNN reported.
His departure clears the way for former Vice President Joe B***n to all but certainly secure the Democratic nomination and go up against President Donald T***p in November.
On Wednesday, Sanders announced his departure on Twitter.
“Today I am suspending my campaign,” the 78-year-old politician wrote . “But while the campaign ends, the struggle for justice continues on.”
In that same tweet, Sanders linked a live-streamed video message in which he thanked his passionate supporters for “transforming American consciousness as to what kind of nation we can become.”
Sanders’ exit comes after a series of losses to B***n in recent primaries.
After winning both the New Hampshire primary and the Nevada caucuses in February, Sanders was viewed as the front-runner in the race.
However, B***n was soon able to pull ahead with a win in the South Carolina primary, as well as a series of victories on Super Tuesday, after which point former candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren dropped out of the race.
President T***p, who has repeatedly referred to Sanders as “crazy”, has taken to Twitter to respond to his exit from the race.
“Bernie Sanders is OUT”, he wrote . “Thank you to Elizabeth Warren. If not for her, Bernie would have won almost every state on Super Tuesday.”
He added, “The Bernie people should come to the R********n Party, TRADE!”
