Take Bill and Melinda Gates, for example. When they divorced in 2021 after 27 years of marriage, Melinda walked away with a multi-billion-dollar settlement. That included a $12.5 billion fund for her philanthropy work.
She later reflected on their split, saying, “On the day I got married, I never thought I’d be divorced, never,” during an interview on CBS Mornings. “It wasn’t one moment or one specific thing that happened. Kevin Costner also learned a costly lesson in love. His divorce from Cindy Silva in 1994, after 16 years together, cost him a massive $80 million.
Years later, his second marriage to Christine Baumgartner also ended in a legal battle. Christine filed for divorce in 2023 after 18 years, asking for $168,000 a month in child support.
In the end, a judge ruled Kevin would pay $63,000 per month, as per 2024 court records.
