I look forward to the day when I will have my own garden where I can plant all the veggies, herbs and flowers I want. Even if you don’t have the best green thumb you too can start a garden.
There are plenty of genius hacks that will ensure your garden is off to a good start and keeps on growing throughout the season.
1. Plant Seeds In A Citrus Shell
Once the seeds grow, you can plant the shell directly in the soil and it will just decompose naturally. Wow, that’s really cool.
2. Use Eggshells To Plant Seeds
On the same token you can also use eggshells to plant the seeds in. It’s pretty much the same idea as citrus shells. Awesome.
3. Sprinkle Cinnamon On Seedings
It’s hard to prevent pests from inhabiting your seedings especially when you’re trying to grow them. But if you sprinkle cinnamon, they’ll stay away.
4. Keep Pests Away With Coffee Grounds
Apparently, used coffee grounds can help you get rid of such pests as ants, snails, and slugs. So don’t throw those coffee grounds away.
5. Use Epsom Salt To Transplant Plants
Prevent transplant shock by adding some Epsom salt to the bottom of where you’re about to plant, then cover it with soil, and plant away.
6. Use Terracotta Stakes And A Wine Bottle
The stakes will absorb the water that’s being drained from the bottle and slowly release it back into the soil. Wow.
7. Kill Weeds With Vinegar
It’s the best natural solution you can use to get rid of weeds fast and safely. No need for expensive and harmful chemicals here.
8. Use Sponges To Prevent Root Rot
Sponges will allow additional air down on the bottom of the pot and will also absorb extra water that can otherwise escape.
9. Use Hydrogen Peroxide To Prevent Root Rot
Another great way to prevent root rot is to mix 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 32 parts water. Didn’t know that.
10. Use Coffee Filters To Prevent Soil Seepage
One way to prevent losing that precious soil is to line your pots with coffee filters. Water will still drain through.
11. Protect Those Seedings With A Milk Jug
Create an instant greenhouse when you put a milk jug over your seedings. They will grow and nurture in peace.
12. Use Old Cork As Plant Markers
Stick those old corks on some skewers to easily mark all your plants so you remember which one is which in a jiffy.
13. Catch Slugs With Beer
Another interesting way to catch those pesky slugs crawling all over your garden is to put out a dish with beer. Even if it’s morbid to think about, at least they’ll drown happy.
14. Keep Deer Away
Shave a bar of soap and sprinkle it throughout your garden to deter deer and other nibblers.
I hope these hacks will give you the confidence in starting your own garden.
There’s nothing like having fresh veggies and herbs at your fingertips. So go to it.
