Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth Part Ways After Years of Marriage

The announcement was made via a joint statement posted on Reese's Instagram page.

"We have some personal news to share," the statement begins. "It is with a great deal of care and consideration that we have made the difficult decision to divorce."

According to the statement, the two apparently "enjoyed so many wonderful years together." It also asserts that the 47-year-old Hello Sunshine founder and her 52-year-old beau are "moving forward with deep love, kindness, and mutual respect."

Additionally, they say that their main priority now is their family, particularly their 10-year-old son, Tennessee.

"These matters are never easy and are extremely personal," the statement continues. "We truly appreciate everyone's respect for our family's privacy at this time."

The statement is signed "Reese and Jim."

Some fans are understandably surprised or disappointed by the news. One commenter on DailyMail says, "I never understand why marriages end if they really are the best of friends. What better foundation is there for marriage than that?"

Another commenter sarcastically quotes the couple's joint statement on Instagram, "'deep love, kindness, and mutual respect' sounds like a recipe for a good marriage!"

"Their statement is way too long and not at all believable in places," says another comment.

"The kids, especially the youngest son, will probably suffer the most."

Others don't seem shocked at all. One comment says, "Hollywood marriages are short-term. A ten-year marriage is considered long-term. They lasted almost 12 years - a long marriage in Hollywood."

Another commenter seems surprised that the two are still together. "I just assumed that they'd been separated since they've lived separate lives for years -- no surprise... I'm wondering if a certain part of their Pre-Nup kicked in at 12 years of marriage since they filed 2 days before their 12th anniversary. She's worth $300 million & Jim's worth $4 million.."

"I honestly thought they were always a strange match. Didn’t see chemistry between them," says another.

However, others don't seem fazed at all, especially on Twitter.

Another person captions the joint statement with, "Who tf is Jim…"

One commenter made a funny but relatable comparison. "Celebrities handle divorce much differently than regular people. Reese Witherspoon released an articulate & definitive statement. Lisa from high school posted cryptic quotes about broken trust and remembering to love yourself, and changed her Facebook profile picture to a sunset."

One of the couple's friends told People magazine, "They really are the best of friends and this is such an amicable decision. They are so committed to co-parenting together. They are invested in their whole family and making this as smooth as possible for everyone."

Aside from their 10-year-old son, Reese also has two older kids, Ava (23) and Deacon (19) whom she co-parents with her ex-husband, Ryan Philippe. The two seem to have a great relationship with Jim, who has been their stepdad since they were 11 and 7, respectively.

That said, another friend told The US Sun that the divorce had been a long time coming, "It's not a matter of if, but when."

Apparently, the two have had their issues for the past few years, and it’s been getting increasingly hard to keep it together.
