Johnny Depp's defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard saw him win on June 1 with the jury aiming to award him $15 million and Heard $2 million for the partial success of her countersuit.

Although the dramatic arguments made during the proceedings and the conflicting reports from both parties made it a tough trial to call, it seems that the jury was largely satisfied that Heard's allegations of sexual and domestic abuse against Depp met the definition of defamation.

After years of public campaigning and months of passionate and constant analysis from all corners, a bizarre and uncomfortable chapter in Depp's life now appears to be drawing to a close.

And both he and Heard have already released statements reacting to the jury's verdict.

For Heard, the verdict was both a crushing disappointment and a worrying sign of what's to come for others.

In a statement released on Instagram, she maintained that Depp prevailed despite a "mountain of evidence" in her favor due to the unspecified power and influence he has.

As she put it, "I'm sad I lost the case. But I am sadder still that I seem to have lost a right I thought I had as an American — to speak freely and openly."

As we can see here, she also considered the verdict a setback for other women who speak out against violence.

We can also see that she believes the verdict will jeopardize the concept of taking violence against women seriously and encourage the further public humiliation of them when they speak out.

For Depp, however, the verdict comes as a relief because it heralds the end of a campaign that he maintains saw him punished for acts he did not commit.

As he said in an Instagram statement of his own, "Six years ago, the life of my children, the lives of those closest to me, and also, the lives of the people, who for many, many years have supported and believed in me were forever changed. All in the blink of an eye."

And while he said he gave considerable thought to the knowledge that the trial would further turn his life into a public spectacle, he maintained that his case against Heard was worth pursuing.

Because as he put it, "From the very beginning, the goal of bringing this case was to reveal the truth, regardless of the outcome."

And as we can see here, he considered that mission something that he owed both his children and all of his supporters who stood by him regardless of how bleak the reports about his alleged behavior became.

So today, he reports feeling at peace because judging by the verdict, he and his legal team have achieved precisely what they set out to do.

In his words, "Six years later, the jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled."
