I can still remember when the Pokémon craze first took hold. Back in the days of playing cards and Game Boys, to be a Pokémon Master was all that any kid ever aspired to be.
When the movie was released, it created a wave of hysteria across the globe.
Let’s get nostalgic and take a look at these 10+ mistakes in Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back that fans never noticed!
That’s not a Pidgeotto
After arriving at Mewtwo’s castle, you’ll notice that one of the other trainers has a Pidgeot — the final evolved form of the Pokémon, Pidgey.
However, the trainer incorrectly refers to him as Pidgeotto , which is the name for the middle-stage.
Brock’s shirt sleeves change color.
This happens near the beginning of the movie, as Brock, Ash, and Misty are on the boat captained by Team Rocket.
Pay close attention to his sleeves and you’ll see them change from mud-orange to green. You can see it as Misty puts Togepi in her bag.
Ash’s eyes change color mid-scene.
Ash’s eyes are always shown as being nearly completely jet-black with just a hint of brown coloring.
When Corey gets finished showing Ash his various Pokémon, we get a shot of Ash’s eyes and the colors are reversed.
Actually, all of Fergus’ Pokémon aren’t Water type.
One of the trainers boasts that Water is the strongest type of Pokémon. He believes it so strongly that none of his Pokémon are anything but.
Yet Fergus has a Nidoqueen , which is a Ground/Poison type.
The Purple People Eaters don’t exist in the Pokémon universe.
When Team Rocket pulls up to the dock that Ash and the gang are at, they’re dressed as Vikings. Ash then makes a very quick reference to the Minnesota Vikings football team.
Which makes no sense, considering they aren’t shared universes.
Togepi’s mouth wasn’t moving.
Listen carefully as Ash receives the invitation from the Dragonite. You can very clearly hear Togepi say “Togepi!”
Only its mouth isn’t moving at all. If I had to guess, I’d say this was more than likely a dubbing error in post-production.
Does Ash have super-strong teeth?
I know, I know — it’s a cartoon. But still, some things just can’t be forgiven. Like when Ash tries to save Pikachu from Mewtwo’s poke-b***s.
For some reason, Ash decides to try and chew through the metal arms that are restraining him. I hope he has a good dentist.
Sorry, Meowth but that isn’t a Sandshrew.
There’s one point in the film where Meowth accidentally refers to a Sandslash as a Sandshrew.
Sandshrew is the first stage of evolution for Sandslash . They look similar but noticeably different. Close, but no cigar Team Rocket.
Does rainwater shrink backpacks?
It certainly appears to in the Pokémon universe! Pay attention to Fergus and Corey as Officer Jenny attempts to warn them about the incoming storm.
Their backpacks shrink drastically as the scene progresses. Does fabric react differently to water in the Poke-verse?
Is Gyrados really cold?
In order to make his way across the rough waters, Fergus deploys his Gyrados. If you look at the Pokémon’s face, you’ll notice his lips in this shot are blue.
This is a mistake because Gyrados has yellow lips.
What’s so funny, Ash?
Watch as Ash rescues Pikachu from Mewtwo’s cloning machine. Right after Squirtle and Bulbasaur are released from their poke-b***s, you can clearly hear Ash start to laugh.
Only his mouth isn’t laughing at all. Does it almost look as if he’s saying something?
A Pikachu would be useless against a Golem.
For this to make sense you need to have a bit of background knowledge on which types of Pokémon affect others.
Golem is a Rock/Ground Pokémon, whereas Pikachu is an Electric-type. Ground Pokémon are all but impervious to Electric attacks.
Fergus doesn’t have a Nidoking.
As I mentioned earlier, Fergus has a Nidoqueen. But if you look right after Mewtwo deflects his Gyrados’ Hyper-Beam attack, the back of the Pokémon that’s shown is a Nidoking — not a Nidoqueen.
Nidoking is the male species.
Team Rocket clearly don’t know their Pokémon.
As Team Rocket watches an array of Pokémon enter the cloning machine, they begin calling them out.
After looking at the silhouette of an Alakazam, they make the mistake of calling it a Scyther. Whoops!
