There’s a lot things that could cause someone to be accidentally late for work: like having to drop kids off at school, having to handle a morning emergency, or waking up feeling sick.
But not all bosses are forgiving. Some will not even let it slide if you get into a car accident. One TikTok user shared their boss’s response after showing them that they got into a car accident on their way to work, and people on the platform were shocked at the response.
The TikTok user shared a screenshot
TikTok user @nurseloveofficial shared a screenshot of the chat between one person and their boss, with the person having sent a picture of a wrecked car.
“Imagine you got in a wreck on your way to work and this is the convo with your boss,” read the text on the post.
The boss wasn’t having it
Although the car was badly wrecked, in the screenshot you could see the boss was not having it as an excuse to be late for work that day.
Immediately after the picture of the wreck they responded, “Keep me updated on what time you’re expecting to be here.”
They didn’t see the wreck as a valid excuse
Moments later, the boss wrote, “It’s understandable why you would be late, but regardless anything that prevents you from being at the workplace other than a death in the family is unexcused at any company.”
Well, I’m not entirely sure that’s true for all companies.
People in the comments started responding
With the post caption asking, “What are you doing in this case?” people in the comments started sharing how they would have responded to the situation.
One person shared that they would respond with, “ok. I quit. Thank u for ur concern and compassion. Have a wonderful day.”
Some users gave actionable advice on the situation
Some commenters shared serious advice on how to handle the matter, with one person saying the way to go was to seek legal protection.
They wrote, “I’d immediately send this to HR and contact your union rep if applicable and if not an attorney.”
Others gave more general rules to go by
Anyone could find themselves in a conversation like this and it can sometimes be difficult to see the bigger picture when faced with these situations.
As a healthy reminder, one user wrote, “Just remember your job is never more important than your well-being.”
People also shared their horror stories
Some users shared similar situations they had been in, with one person saying they decided to block their workplace number when they were told to come into work after their 4-month-old baby was admitted to the PICU.
You have to admit that’s a difficult situation to be in.
Others shared stories about being in the ER
People wrote about ER stories with one sharing, “My old boss tried to write me up when I was in the ER about to have emergency surgery. He came to the ER to give me a write-up but said he was just checking on me. I never went back.”
There are still some good bosses out there
While these stories may be upsetting, a few people shared nicer ones, proving that there are still good bosses out there.
One person wrote that they gave an employee the day off after asking to take it due to exam stress, ending their story with “It’s not difficult to be understanding.”
Another approved leave with pay
Another boss in the comments shared their compassion, writing, “My coworker’s mother-in-law passed away and he requested days off a week later bc his wife was having a rough time, I approved it, with pay. It’s not that hard to be a good boss.”
It’s good to know that there are still a lot of good apples out there.
