The more that we see people reach their breaking point with their jobs, the better we can appreciate that we don’t all have the same work day.
Whether people are dealing with consistent understaffing during busy periods, managers whose desire for control has gutted any sense of basic human decency they had left, or the reality of long hours and double shifts , it’s clear that they’re made to deal with more than they can handle.
And while that explains why so many employees are quitting their jobs nowadays, it also shows us that those who aren’t a a position to do this can find themselves in a truly desperate situation with no apparent options.
That’s how one gas station employee ended up making a hard decision that still showed a lot more care than their story might make it sound.
On one lonely night, the person we’re about to hear from was watching over the only gas station in town that’s open 24 hours a day.
And as they explained in a Reddit post , this night also came after two months where multiple employees called out from their shifts or simply didn’t show up for them at once.
Unfortunately, this person found out the hard way that the night in question would be no exception after an employee who was supposed to relieve them from their 2pm-10pm shift never arrived.
And when this became clear, the worker called their manager only to learn that she was already fast asleep.
Her husband said he’d “try” to wake her up and while the employee waited for either of them to call back, they called around for anyone else who could work that shift with no luck.
In their words, “By this point it’s 10:45 and I haven’t heard from anyone I texted my manager and told her I was locking the store and going home as I was not about to work a 16 hour shift.”
However, this person soon realized that they couldn’t actually lock the store since their sleeping manager was the only one who had any keys.
So they locked what doors they could and put in a call to the local sheriff’s department in the hopes that someone could watch over the store.
Replies to this person’s post were impressed and assured the worker that although they left the store open overnight, they did everything they could to ensure the store was safe without forcing themselves into an interminable shift.
And it seems the manager couldn’t fault them either as even though she clearly didn’t like hearing that they wouldn’t be coming in the next day, she held her tongue.
However, the worker did say, “My manager just texted me saying ‘do not tell anyone about last night’ and ‘it would get us both in trouble.'”
They figured she was trying to cover her own b**t there, but it’s a little too late for that in any case.
