Who runs the world? Sorry, Bey, it’s not girls; at least not yet. It’s society .
It tells us how to act, how to dress, and what’s appropriate to say . But enough is enough of that. We’ve been slowly getting our power back by living life on our own terms.
These 16 women are proof of that. Here, they share the things society hates that they secretly love.
Having a “boring” life
“Give me an afternoon at home with a book any time over hiking or sports or any other activity that most people would consider fun. U/ msstark . Once you’re older, going out to clubs and drinking isn’t as appealing.
Having body hair
Men really have it easy. Besides grooming their face, they get to keep their armpit, arm, and leg hair as it is. For women, though? We’re expected to be shaved all over. The upkeep of this is exhausting and expensive.
Being a homemaker
“All I want is to be a stay-at-home mom, and sew my family’s clothes, and crochet them hats, and cook every day and make homemade bread. The whole point of feminism is that it’s your choice.” – u/ thesomethingfox
Going places alone
“I’ve been to two concerts by myself and it truly is liberating! You only have to worry about yourself. The mini conversations with people, the artist, and it truly is so much more personal. It feels like it’s just you and the artist in the venue.” – u/ reverieGrasslands
Playing with toys
If you’ve ever had the chance to sit down and play with toys, like Barbies and other dolls, you’d remember how much fun it is. This then leads you to wonder why you ever stopped playing. It’s because society makes us believe that it’s only for kids.
Men being romantic and chivalrous
“Men being chivalrous. We live in a time where women are still establishing our equality & some toxic feminism makes it seem like we don’t need men or want men doing anything for us.” – u/ h2Onymph
Being over 30
While it feels like a death sentence to some (especially if they haven’t gotten married or had kids yet), many women love the idea of turning 30. One Redditor wrote that their life has gotten exponentially better since turning 30.
Traveling alone
“Traveling alone, especially long solo road trips. I sleep in my truck at truck stops and just generally enjoy my own company. I’ve had numerous people be aghast that I don’t bring my partner with me, but I really prefer to travel alone.” – u/ JackNikon
“Masculine” hobbies
This includes things like fishing, hunting, shooting guns, video games, and more. Many women prefer these things to so-called “female” hobbies, like knitting and sewing. As long as it makes them happy, who cares if it’s not a traditional hobby?
Being complimented by anyone
“Being complimented by anyone. I love feeling good just as much as the next person, just don’t be creepy about it. Compliments like ‘I love your outfit’ or ‘you have a beautiful smile’ anything sweet and genuine is so much better than a ‘nice rack can I get your snap.’” – u/ YourCourtJester
Girly and “basic” things
Anything “fluffy,” society has taught us to turn our nose up at it. But so many of these things are loved by women, like drinking pumpkin spice lattes, watching Hallmark movies, and having a serious love for cheesy romance novels.
Loving your “flaws”
“Everything about my looks but I LOVE my hip dips and my moles and body hair and I really look forward to rocking the grey afro if I live old enough to see those days. I love my natural ‘imperfections’ because I don’t see them as flaws.” – u/ BaileyHeart
Not getting married or having kids
Society has some really outdated thoughts on this. They believe that all women must want the same things. But the truth is that everyone is different and we shouldn’t be shamed for our choices.
Having old, ratty stuff
“I love having stuff that serves its function without me having to worry about it breaking/getting damaged/etc. Tiny engagement ring, tiny wedding ring, 15-year old living room furniture from craigslist, etc..” -u/ Hiciao . Thrift stores and yard sales are where it’s at!
Liking Brussel sprouts
We’re ending on a lighthearted note! One Redditor wrote that pop culture growing up told them that Brussels sprouts were the grossest things in the world and tasted like death. But when they had them roasted with a little oil and garlic? They fell in love.
