Twins can be fascinating, especially if they’re identical but they can lead to confusion as you try to differentiate between them. Imagine having identical twins with identical names, though.
That was the reality of a woman on Reddit who shared her story about meeting twins with the “exact same name” as one another, and the experience left her with so many questions.
How the encounter took place
The woman encountered the twins in her professional life, recounting the incident on Reddit, saying: “In my professional life recently I encountered adult twins with the exact same name! Their middle names were different but very similar. Not their real names, but an example would be: Twin 1: Jane Richelle Doe Twin 2: Jane Rochelle Doe. Absolutely Wild.”
The woman’s reaction
This incident left the woman with many questions. First, she questioned their parents’ mindset. She wondered why they would do that to the girls and the people. Second, she was confused about why the girls were against changing their names as they grew up.
Not the only ones
Other Reddit users started sharing their experiences and turns out that the woman is not alone. One user said: “I once saw an announcement for twins: Nicholas Ray and Nicole Rae.” Another user replied to this comment, saying that the parents have a “real lack of creativity.”
Another strange incident
Another user recounted how they knew a woman named “Tammy Raye,” named after her father whose name is “Tommy Ray.” The user thought that this was “terrible” but turns out the woman’s experience is so much worse.
A user expressing his raging rejection of the concept
One other user expressed frustration with the concept, saying: “I wouldn’t even give my kids the same initials, twins or not. Every time you get mail for J. Do you have to guess who it’s for. in my family we already have issues with L. Last name and I. Last name because they’re so similar, they often accidentally open each others mail.”
Plenty of confusion
Another user expanded on the having the same initials issue, saying: “My dad, my brother and I all have names that start with the letter P. So when mail comes that’s just addressed as P. (Surname) We got to have the ‘which one of us opens this?’ conversation.”
More on having the same initials
Another user recounted a story about having the same initials: “My dad’s parents decided that their five children’s names should all start with the letter ‘R’. Once my dad started receiving mail, he gave his name as ‘Quentin’ so he’d know it was his letter landing on the doormat!”
Identical twins
Identical, monozygotic, or paternal twins are twins that come from the same fertilized egg, which splits into two. Identical twins have the same gender and share the same genes.
They provide a high degree of genetic influence on human development, according to Psychology Today.
Fraternal twins
Fraternal or dizygotic twins are twins that develop from two different eggs and are fertilized by two different sperm. Generally, they share about half of their genes. So, fraternal twins are like typical brothers and sisters, but they’re born on the same day.
What would you do?
With fraternal twins, it can be a bit better since you will be able to tell them apart if they have the same name. However, what would you do if you ever met identical twins with the same name? How would you handle the situation?
