I was not the most popular kid in school. I was nerdy, wore a lot of hand-me-downs, and was the annoying type that never studied and yet still got straight-As.
So yeah…I did not get asked to prom. But I still went, because it was an excuse to dress up and have fun with some other nerdy friends. One of them even wore a dress made some Smurfs bed sheets. It was incredible!
Still, there’s a wistful part of me that looks back on my solo prom photos and feels left out.
Like, I don’t have any of those awkward teen couple photos other people have. On one hand, it’s a blessing, but it sometimes feels like I missed a rite of teenage passage.
One teen’s grandpa wasn’t going to leave her hanging, though.
Seventeen-year-old Kaylah Bell had plans to do prom right. She found a beautiful strapless gown with big watercolor-style florals on it.
That wasn’t epic enough, though, so she added some extra flare.
Inspired by the fashion on the CW show Reign , she wanted a cape like those worn by the character Mary, Queen of Scots, and also added a sparkly belt.
Since capes aren’t easy to find year-round, Kaylah went custom.
She and her grandparents found the perfect material to match her dress and had a seamstress make the cape, complete with a gem clasp.
Her look was on point, but her grandparents weren’t done helping her making the evening perfect.
When prom arrived, her grandfather dressed up to match her for photos. Lots of parents or grandparents might take pics with their dressed up teen, but Kaylah’s grandpa went above and beyond.
He matched her perfectly, in a dark pinstripe suit and pink tie.
He even bought her a corsage with a matching boutonniere for his lapel.
Kaylah told The Daily Mail , “My Grandpa is a pastor of his own church and people say he is the sharpest pastor in the Antelope Valley. So I’m sure he already had his look in his closet.”
The pics are so beautiful!
He didn’t actually attend the dance — the age cap was 21 — but he spent time with Kaylah and her friends taking pictures outside.
The gesture was a complete surprise to Kaylah, which made it even more special.
“My papa matching was truly a blessing to me, it makes me emotional to think about it because we are super close,” she said, “I really just felt blessed that I was able to create this memory with him.”
