Much maligned in recent years both for its quality and its image, the once-mighty Victoria’s Secret has announced that they’re seeking a new way forward with their models.
Long known for scantily-clad ‘Angels’, the lingerie brand says it’s going for a less objectifying look moving forwards, and will immediately begin partnering with inspirational women like entrepreneur Priyanka Chopra Jonas and soccer star Megan Rapinoe.
Victoria’s Secret CEO Martin Waters told The New York Times that the Angels, who’ve been the brand’s signature image since the late 1990s, were “not culturally relevant.”
The Twitter reactions have been pouring in.
The stereotypical male demographic didn’t seem to like the move, as evidenced by this tweet. I’d recommend skimming the tweet and then just enjoying the many ways he gets dunked on.
The Rapinoe announcement in particular triggered a few Twitter users.
I’m not sure what the argument here really is. If people can’t be inspired by one of the best women’s soccer players in history, it’s hard to know who else to put in that position.
Are the models really the problem?
While it’s a nice idea to be less objectifying and more celebratory, some users pointed out that the downfall of Victoria’s Secret might be attributable more to slipping quality control standards than to the models it uses.
It’s a bold strategy.
They say that any publicity is good publicity, and Victoria’s Secret has definitely drummed up some press attention with this announcement…even if many of the tweets come from triggered morons.
What do you think?
It’s a huge change of direction for a brand that’s long associated itself with glamourous, scantily-clad supermodels. We’ll see how it pans out.
