After a long, grueling week of watching as state election bureaus throughout the country tabulate the nation’s votes, we now know that Joe Biden will be the 46th president of the United States.
The news has prompted celebrations in some streets and protests in others but it’s a result that will heavily influence how America proceeds both at home and abroad.
And while such a moment may have us looking in wonder toward the future, it’s hard not to acknowledge the chaotic recent history that brought us here.
And as far as those throughout social media are concerned, a new hat that Biden has been spotted wearing does just that in a subtle yet mischievous way.
On the day that his electoral win was announced, Biden appeared in this photo with the soon-to-be First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden.
And while the fact that she’s covering up the “vice” on this sign signifies a big new chapter in this family’s lives, the “We just did” on Biden’s hat could refer to something else entirely.
And it’s not just the fact that he won the election, as something like “we did it” may have been more appropriate in that context.
That’s especially true in light of the fact that Biden apparently learned of his win through this phone call from Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris.
So if it’s not a reference to that, what is it talking about?
Although this may depend on where you live, you’ve likely noticed at least a few people walking around with red “Make America Great Again” hats that were a signature of the Trump campaign.
So to observers like the ones whose tweets I’m interspersing here, Biden’s hat seemed like a pretty definite answer to “make America great again.”
Given that Biden’s campaign focused a great deal on returning to the kind of stability that seemed absent during the unpredictable Trump years, it’s hard not to see the hat as a parting troll on the sitting president.
And if they’re right, these folks should expect that kind of timeliness from Biden’s marketing team by now.
After all, it’s hard not to remember that as recently as a month ago, Biden’s campaign responded to an incident during the vice presidential debate before the night was even over.
You may recall that this debate saw a fly land on Vice President Mike Pence’s head for a couple of minutes.
Not only did Biden take a smiling photo with a fly swatter that night but his campaign’s store was selling branded models the day after.
These no longer seem to be available but they definitely show a pattern of reacting to the zeitgeist that seems to be persisting.
