When you work as a cashier , you see a lot of people from different walks of life. While most customer service stories revolve around a r**e Karen or someone harassing a poor minimum wage worker, there are plenty that are actually heartwarming .
A woman on TikTok shares a story of the time she gave a discount to a family in need.
Posted by the TikTok account @allthingslabor, the woman tells the story of a time when she used to be a cashier at a department store.
A father and son come up with jeans and shirts for the son, as well as work shoes for the dad.
They ring their purchases through and the total comes up to around $100.
The dad then tells the son that they can’t afford everything.
He’s speaking to his son in Spanish (and doesn’t know that the cashier can understand them), and says he’ll put the shoes back so that his son can have his school clothes.
The son then says they can put the jeans back because the dad needs the shoes for work.
And the cashier is left absolutely heartbroken.
So, she tells them they forgot their discount.
She then gives them a 30% discount, and an extra 15% discount on top of that (which she explains she wasn’t supposed to do).
They were able to pay for everything.
To be honest, touching stories like this remind us that there’s still some good to be found in the world of customer service.
Many people in the comments praised her for this.
“Thank you, I remember a time when my dad had to put stuff back because he couldn’t afford it. I will always remember what it felt like,” user @esther.melnik commented.
Some even shared their own stories.
User @baycitydawgs415 said, “I used to do that too. I used the employee discount and add a clearance discount bc item was ‘damaged.'”
Needless to say, this woman wielded her cashier authorities for good.
As a former cashier myself, I appreciate it when employees do what they can to help people who might need it, or even just give people little discounts because they were so nice.
