Everyone has a different perception of what’s important during the holiday season. What the holidays are about , you know?
Of course, for many people, their faith is at the top of that list automatically, but the next rung down might be family, or presents, or 24-hour Christmas music stations.
My favorite part is just the atmosphere. The general spirit of joy and goodwill that seems to last all December.
Just something about everything lit up in bright colors brings me joy, which is probably why this story tickled my fancy so much.

Since the early aughts, the town of Newburgh, Fife in Scotland has made their annual festive light displays even more special .
Each year, they hold a contest for local children to submit designs for a new light to be added to the mix.
The winning artist doesn’t just get to see their design turned into a giant neon light fixture, but also get the honor of turning it on the first time.

The runner-up isn’t left out either. Their artwork becomes the town’s official Christmas card design for the year.
This is exactly the sort of joyful community story we need in a year like this, but of course 2020 had to add a wrinkle.

Due to the pandemic, the local community committee couldn’t fundraise for the Annual Christmas Lights Display. This meant that there wasn’t enough money to pay to have a new custom neon light manufactured.
In fact, it was looking like there might not be enough in the coffers to even afford hanging the lights this year.
Not wanting to let the town down in an already depressing year, the committee turned to other fundraising options.
They created a GoFundMe campaign to raise the £1000 needed to organize the event.
And just a few days ago, they reached their target!
Now that’s the kind of holiday spirit I can get behind.
