Getting engaged isn’t an every day occurrence. It’s an event that’s usually marked by a special occasion, such as your friends hiding behind bushes to take pictures of your partner getting down on one knee.
But, what about the ring itself?

Well, according to a TikTok made by Madison Write, jewelry designer and owner of Madberet Fine Jewelry , while the hows and whens of a proposal should be a surprise, the ring shouldn’t be.
I mean, it kind of makes sense.
After all, who would want to be surprised by a ring that you don’t actually like, and now have to wear forever or get exchanged?
Plenty of people commented on the initial TikTok.

You can’t have a hot take on the internet without getting a lot of attention, after all.
Many people agreed with Wright’s take.

“Take her ring shopping sometimes what she thinks she wants isn’t what she’ll want to walk away with once she tries different styles on,” user @big.nerd wrote.
Of course, plenty of other people disagreed, too.

“Don’t agree here. I wanted the ring to be a surprise and so did he. My best friend knew my style and he went shopping with her,” says @_benevolentblonde.
There was so much buzz, Write posted a follow-up TikTok.
In the video, she takes inspiration from some of the comments she received on her previous TikTok, giving advice on how to keep a bit of surprise in the engagement process.
And that advice was pretty sound.

It included creating a look book of different rings for your partner and jeweler to look through to get inspiration on a design, as well as working on the design itself together, but then having the final gemstone be a surprise.
In the end though, it’s going to be up to the couple.

Who knows you better than your partner, right? Some people may love the idea of a surprise, while others are absolutely terrified of certain proposals (like public ones).
So you just have to do it your way.

If this is someone you can see yourself marrying, then the proposal will work out in the end. Probably.
