Selena Gomez took a look back on past relationships in her conversation on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast on Monday March 24. The podcast was a combined interview with her fiancé Benny Blanco.
They were on the podcast to promote their album

The Only Murders in the Building star was on the podcast with her fiancé to promote their joint album I Said I Love You First which was released Friday March 21, just days prior to the interview.
On the podcast, the couple spoke about their relationship and how one may handle conflict with their romantic partner.
Gomez reflected on her past relationships

The Good For You singer reflected on her feelings in past relationships as she, her fiancé and the host spoke candidly about regulating one’s emotions during conflict situations in relationships.
Gomez admitted she has been ‘guilty’
Speaking about occasionally getting too emotional and overblown, Gomez said, “I’ve been guilty though to start. I think for me, I necessarily felt like in other situations of mine I was very reactive. I think that’s why I was alone for five years because I really needed to collect myself.”
She was worried about getting into a new relationship

Gomez explained that she has had to spend some time working on herself and emotionally maturing in order to have a healthy relationship. This initially made her worry she might not have been emotionally ready for a serious relationship with Blanco.
Gomez reflected on the start of her relationship with Blanco
“I think in the past, that’s why I said to him [Blanco] all the time 10 years ago it’s not that I wouldn’t have wanted to be with you, I just wouldn’t have been in the right headspace, and I don’t think you deserved what I had gone through before,” Gomez said.
“I’ve learned a lot of lessons and I’ve made mistakes and I just want this to be right. So for me, that was a lesson that I had to learn,” she added.
She explained Blanco helped her improve

The Lose You to Love Me singer added that Blanco had helped her a lot with regulating her emotions, explaining, “I think girls can equally want to be right. For me, it was really difficult in the past and he’s made it unbelievably easy so that if I even get to the point where I’m so frustrated, he’s like very quick to understand.”
The couple started dating in 2023
Gomez explained that Blanco’s patience with her emotions helped her change her frame of mind and stop reacting too quickly to things that frustrate her.
The two started dating two years ago in 2023 and got engaged in December 2024.
They announced an album together after the engagement
A few weeks after they announced their engagement, they teased fans with new music and an announcement that they would be releasing the joint album I Said I Love You First.
A press release announcing the album read, “This album came together organically as a direct result of the comfort that they both felt when working together creatively, allowing them to produce art that authentically reflects their experiences. It chronicles their entire story—before they met, falling in love and looking to what the future holds.”
