Spending time with family over Christmas is important to most of the people who celebrate the holiday. But that can get a lot more complicated when some of your family lives in a different country. If you’re planning on leaving the country to visit family for the holidays, you’re probably going to expect that they have a place for you to sleep.
One teen, the youngest of her family, was shocked when she found out that her mother, who lives in Europe, is planning on having her sleep outside in a tent over Christmas. The rest of the family will have space indoors. The teen’s refusal made the rest of her family angry, and now she’s asking Reddit’s AITA community if she was in the wrong .
User Few-Mountain-5677 Shared Her Story.
At 18, OP Is The Youngest Out Of Her Siblings.
Her parents are divorced, and each has since remarried. OP’s mother lives in Europe, and wanted all four of her kids over for Christmas this year.
In addition to being the youngest, OP is the only one of her siblings to be unmarried and not have kids. As such, the mom thought she’d be fine with sleeping in a tent outdoors.
When OP found this out, she talked to her mother about it. Her mother lives in a large house with her stepdad, so they would likely have room for the whole family. But the mom said there was no more room indoors for OP. OP contested, stating that she could just sleep on the couch. But apparently, the stepdad likes to watch TV late so she’d be too much of a nuisance.
The other siblings are telling OP that she should just s**k it up, sleeping outdoors isn’t a big deal. But they also say they can’t because of their kids. The only person on OP’s side is her dad, who thinks the mom is being unfair.
Luckily For OP, The Comment Section Is Also On Her Side.
It seems like the mom prioritizes her husband’s television-watching habits over her daughter’s sleep.
Users even discuss how easy it would be for the stepdad to compromise for a few nights.
Expecting A Guest To Sleep Outdoors Is Bad Hosting.
Commenters agreed that the mom was being a bad host. Expecting anyone to sleep outdoors in the winter is just cruel.
Users Worried That, If OP Chose To Go, She’d Be In An Unsafe Situation.
OP did not say which country her mom is from, but stated that she’d probably be safe from danger in the tent. Still, it would be much too cold for someone to sleep out there.
