So here’s something a lot of people don’t know about me: I happen to be a big fan of that TLC show, 90 Day Fiancé .
If you’ve never seen it, please watch it. I know the title is enough to turn people away, but it’s the most dramatic, hilarious, absolute wild ride of a reality show I have ever seen, and I am positively obsessed.
Anyway, the reason I bring that up is because I feel like some of the couples on that show have a seriously warped idea about what “marriage” really is.
And I’m not talking about the people who so clearly just want a green card and are willing to become someone’s spouse to get it.
I’m referring to those bright-eyed, blissfully ignorant individuals who had a brief fling with someone in a different country, and who decided they were now fully prepared to say “I do.”
This is all without having ever lived with the other person, or really gotten to know them.

Hey, I’m not judging, and it certainly makes for great TV. But imagine doing that with someone you met here. Just imagine it.
You know that guy you met at the bar that one night? Yeah, imagine getting married to him after that one fleeting, rather unremarkable encounter.
That’s this show .
In a lot of cases, the couples really struggle to deal with being married to a complete stranger.

Personally, I think that’s because they underestimated all that goes in to picking a partner. Sure, there’s a certain allure when it comes to foreign romances, and I’m sure it all feels very dramatic and worthwhile in theory.
But when you get married to someone, it definitely helps if you know what you’re getting yourself into first before the rings go on.
And sometimes even then, they can still surprise you.
Did you ever think you’d get so annoyed with someone just because of the way they snore? Nope, but that’s marriage for ya.
Of course, the people on the show struggle with some bigger issues, like their partner having a secret criminal history, a mountain of gambling debt, or maybe even a few illegitimate children.
But add the snoring on top of that, and you’ve got a perfect storm.
