Our homes are our safe havens, our refuges from the world, the place where we’re meant to be at our most comfortable in between all the hustle and bustle of life outside.
However, sometimes our houses turn against us, ushering in destruction and momentary dispair. This list is chock full of those moments, showing people whose houses have turned against them.

“This is my view from the bathroom floor, looking at the hole in the ceiling I just fell through.”
This guy seemed to be in pretty high spirits about having just fallen through his ceiling, evidently as he took a photo and uploaded it online.
Also, note the dog in the background staring down at him with an alarmed expression.
A quick escalation.
“9 months ago I started a small project to refinish my wood floors in the living room … cue a hunt for where [the] water under the floor was from.”
It always starts with the small projects, doesn’t it? Things are never that easy.
“My friend finally checked on her garage fridge after the polar vortex.”
You know, all thigns considered, this could have been a lot worse! There are a lot of cans and bottles still fully intact, and being able to drink those will be a great reward for cleaning up the mess that did happen.
Sealed shut.
“My air conditioner stopped working for a few days. My house got so hot and humid, it sealed my entire Costco size case of envelopes.”
Do people still send letters these days? So many that they need a bulk-sized box of them? Color me surprised.
“Well, I guess no entry to my attic till Spring.”
Thankfully, the uploader seemed pretty chill about allowing the bats to hang out up there until winter is over, and thank goodness for that too. A lot of bat species have declining populations, so even one finding a safe place to hibernate is a great thing!
“I bought my first house 2 months ago. I realized today that the hose of my dryer is connected to nothing.”
Wow! Thanks to the previous installers for leaving a bafflingly huge fire hazard in this house so casually, it takes a lot of ignorance to blatantly ignore that problem.
Thank goodness they noticed it now and are able to clean it out before the worst happened.
“I spent an hour and a half cleaning the kitchen when I finished I thought id make coffee.”
Any incident that screws you over right at the start of your day is the absolute worst. It’s so easy to just give up on having a good day right then and there, if I can’t have my coffee go right then nothing will!
“Came home today to find my bathroom mirror in a million pieces.”
Better to find that when you come home than to have it happen while you’re standing in front of it, but then again, that’s the case with most of the things on this list. It’s always worse if something falls on you.
“I’m trapped forever. Me in my bedroom, trying to catch her, [her] propped in the doorway.”
No way would I ever be able to walk through that door without knowing she was gone first. Look at how she’s poised, ready to drop on the head of the first unsuspecting victim to wander on in, a perfectly-timed ambush.
The first thing to happen.
“My brother bought his first house yesterday. He drove his car inside the garage with the only garage door opener in it, shut the door, and forgot that the keypad hadn’t been programmed yet. We spent over an hour breaking into his own garage.”
“A bin fell off the ceiling garage shelf.”
That was a pretty well-aimed bin, it kept all the damage to the windshield and not the hood at all!
Really, that’s a lucky break, it’ll be easy to fix. Though driving it to get it fixed might prove to be a little difficult.
“My bedroom floods every time it rains. The apt complex has done nothing and is out of ideas.”

I feel like landlords aren’t allowed to just give up like that. Surely there’s a professional they can hire to tear up the carpet or something. This could be dangerous stuff if that causes mold to start growing.
Until this is solved, looks like you don’t owe them any rent.
“Thought somebody had crashed a car into our kitchen at 5:30 this morning. No, it was just our glass table smashing itself to bits.”
This is objectively better than someone hitting your house as there’s no structural damage, but it still sucks because it’s quite the cleanup job regardless.
At least the bananas stayed safe! So you can have a snack while you look at the remnants of your table.
“Somehow, a 2 inch ceramic drawer went missing from my living room. My roommate and I have no idea where it went.”
This is a step up from magically losing socks in washing machines, our house managed to swipe a whole ceramic fixture from right under your nose! Or your roommate broke it and is too afraid to tell you, but the house eating it seems more likely.
The price of security.
“I had to get a new lock and key for my bedroom door because my sister keeps stealing stuff from my room. The key broke and now I’m locked in.”
Seeing as it looks like you got this lock and key system from 1892, you shouldn’t be surprised that it broke so easily!
“My kitchen fell apart.”
Yeah. That’s really the gist of it, isn’t it? How else are you meant to describe your entire cabinet system just popping off the walls?
Really, though, this sucks, but at least it’s a great excuse to finally do some renovating!
“Had to move my palm plant to paint my bedroom, forgot the ceiling fan was on.”
How fast is that ceiling fan spinning where it can cleanly chop plants apart like this? Or are the blades made out of sharpened steel?
My condolences for your plant, but you should stop taping knives to your lighting fixtures if you don’t want things to get cut up.
“This morning I learned that this is called a torsion spring. I also learned that I can’t lift my garage door by myself…”
I’ll pass on what the comments were advising, which is to only hire professionals to fix garage door springs. They’re notoriously dangerous and can cause a wicked amount of damage to anyone who doesn’t know what they’re doing. Better to be safe than sorry!
Can’t catch a break.
“Our ceiling randomly collapsed tonight. Could have been worse, but with our microwave and fridge going out this week, along with our front door falling off, and a massive tree branch falling onto our car, it’s just icing on the cake this week.”
The end of an era.
“Thought I had a bird living in my wall – after 4 months of sleepless nights I tore the room apart and found out it was an alarm that short circuited buried at the back of a drawer.”
