Hurricane Dorian recently ravaged the Bahamas in a way that nobody expected.
We may be living in the future in some ways, but in terms of natural disaster relief, society has a lot of work to do in order to ensure that even the least privileged of us are safe and prepared.
One thing that people don’t talk about enough in regard to hurricane relief is the aftermath.
Say that you and your family had to evacuate pretty quickly during a storm, meaning that you didn’t have any time to clear out your fridge.
It’s likely that your electrical power may have shut off at some point during the storm, which would wreck your food, but how can you be actually sure that it’s safe to eat? You can’t.
What if I told you that there was a way to figure out if your power went out during a hurricane?
No, seriously. It’s not only true, but literally fool proof. All you need is a quarter, your fridge, and a cup of water.
Fill a cup with water and put it in the freezer.
When the water is frozen solid, put a quarter on top of the ice, then place the cup back in the freezer.
I know, I know, it seems pointless. I’m getting there, trust me.
This trick works no matter how long you’ve been gone.
When you return, check to see where the quarter is. If it is in the exact same place, your power never went off and your food is safe to eat.
If it is at the bottom of the cup, your power went off at some point, and your food is not safe to eat.
If the quarter is somewhere in the middle, then your power shut off briefly and turned back on, meaning that you should exercise caution when choosing which food is safe to eat.
My mind is fully blown.
The quarter trick isn’t just for protecting your wallet against the scourge of having to replace an entire fridge of food—it’s for protecting your health, and if that’s the only food you have access to, it could protect your life.
