Spooky szn is right around the corner, which means it’s time for the internet to turn to one of its favorite topic: creepy stuff! Over on Threads, @rombesk asked: “What’s the a creepy fact you wish you never learned?” And let me tell you, I do wish I could unlearn most of these.
I’m suddenly scared of my immune system

“If your [immune] system finds out you have eyes, you go blind.” Okay, so what’s up with that?
User _samoilis_ explained: “Your eyes have their own immune system because they are very sensitive, and if they didnt you could go blind[from] a normal infection in your body. So if your immune system recognises your eyes, it will attack them. That usually happen if you lose one of your eyes [–] then your immune system has a chance to attack the eye you didn’t lose.”
The human body is so cool and so creepy. Even thinking about my eyes being attacked by my body is freaking me right out!
I am NEVER eating figs again

Figs have wasps in them. I am so upset right now.
According to p.a._g.e: “The Queen Fig Wasp has one day when the fig will allow her to squeeze through the surface (however, the tight squeeze does remove her wings). Figs flower internally, the Queen wasp will then lay hundreds of eggs and pollinate the fig from within. After doing so, she [dies]. Gestation of these eggs takes about 5 weeks. The wingless males [will] hatch first, dig their way to the surface, and distract/sacrifice themselves to the fig wasp eating ants (allowing the females to make a hasty, unscathed escape).”
There’s a reason there aren’t more mummies in the world

And it’s because the British ate them. No, really.
“[…] British people used to take mummified bodies and unwrap them at mummy parties. It’s even said that they would consume them too ? They also made paint from the remains and made a ‘Mummy White’ color. I couldn’t believe it.”
Yes, this is true. Yes, it is a horrifying search that I do not recommend (unless you’re morbidly fascinated by this kind of stuff, like I secretly am).
As if childbirth wasn’t torture enough

“Chainsaws were originally invented to help with childbirth,” celestial_covers_ replied.
One of the first chainsaws was a hand-cranked mechanism used to break through bone and cartilage to aid in childbirth. They came into use in the 18th century, and in no way resemble the mechanized ones we use today.
krowsworld added an important bit of information: “Yeah & it was tested on black women.”
This sounds horrible

“The fact that Locked-in syndrome exists,” filiascriptoris said.
Locked-in Syndrome is a condition where the patient is completely paralyzed, but perfectly conscious. The brain is fully functional while the body remains completely immobile. That idea scares the daylights out of me!
It’s a creepy world after all

Hey, I wish I could go back in time and unread this one!
itschristmasalways said: “The dolls in It’s A Small World have their hair cut each year.”
That is so frickin’ creepy! I do not like that at ALL. Luckily, the truth behind it isn’t as terrifying as it first appears: the yarn the dolls’ hair made of expands due to the humidity in the air, requiring them to be trimmed once a year. WHEW. I was scared for a second there.
Babies are so weird

“That babies don’t have kneecaps until they’re over a month old,” sherryscribbles said.
This one is 50/50 in terms of truth. docrobperry added: “They do. They’re just formed of cartilage rather than bone, so you can’t see them on an X-ray, but they’re still there. They become bony at a few years of age.”
Yeah. Babies are still super weird.
Ever wonder why your dog loves squeaky toys?

You can never un-learn this one.
“Dogs like squeaky toys because it mimics the sound of injured animals,” theebrockjensen shared.
That’s also why they dig the squeaker mechanism from the middle of the toy. Oh, and this same thing goes for cats. You’re welcome!
The US is a wild place

“By far most known serial killers are from the US. It’s not even close to numbers two and three in the list,” milkohit said.
It’s true. In fact, the United States has more serial killers than the next 10 highest countries combined. What’s up with that, America? What’s going on over there?
Thanks, I hate it

“That our skull looks like this before we lose our milk teeth,” mel_1704 helpfully supplied.
My trypophobia (fear of clustered holes) is off the CHARTS right now. Knowing my skull used to look like this is so upsetting. No thank you!
This is why I don’t eat seafood

yogimammas said: “Shrimp, scallops, and crawdads are just water bugs. Roaches of the sea.”
This also goes for lobsters, by the way. Sea bugs. You guys are just eating sea bugs! This is why I don’t eat anything that comes from the ocean. Well, that and I don’t like the taste, but still.
I did not know this was a thing

“There’s a phenomenon called “Cotard’s Delusion” where people believe they are dead, do not exist, or have lost their internal organs or blood. It’s a rare psychiatric disorder that can lead individuals to deny their own existence or the existence of certain body parts despite evidence to the contrary,” krishka8 said.
The ocean is a scary place

“Point Nemo is a place on Earth where you’re more likely closer to astronauts in the ISS than any other human on Earth. Just thinking about being alone at the Ocean makes me feel uneasy…”
I do not plan to visit Point Nemo anytime soon. Or ever, actually!
The human brain is crazy

“That there’s a condition called the Truman syndrome, based off of the Truman show where the patient believes their lives are constantly being watched and everyone they pass by or meet is in on it. But there really isn’t a cure for it because, one, we are all being constantly watched by our phones. And 2. There is no proof that we live in a simulation or not. So treatment is difficult. No thanks,” cloudysart said.
I can’t imagine how horrible this would be to have in the age of social media and surveillance.
Orcas are insane

“Orca whales like to rip out the livers of great white sharks for sport. The whales do not eat the liver or the shark, they just rip it out for fun,” morgan.boless said.
This is partially true. Orcas do hunt them for their livers, but it’s because the livers are fatty and nutritious – it’s not about sport! Still, though. Orcas are scary.
Yeah, ew

I knew this, but being reminded of it is so upsetting. “Caesar dressing was made out of anchovies. […] I really didn’t need to know that,” chosen___1___ said.
And there I was, bragging I don’t eat seafood. I guess I do eat anchovies, tragically. Ew!
