Liking a bad movie is such a classic guilty pleasure that we’ve all grown used to the phrase ‘so bad it’s good’.
You probably have your own favorite bad movie , the one that gets you weird looks when you say you enjoy it. Someone on Reddit asked for people to share theirs, maybe you’ll find a friend with similar taste in the answers!
Perfection.
” Flash Gordon .”
This answer had many supporters, including someone who had to remind the person who said it of the question at hand. “They said ‘awful’, not ‘masterpieces’.”
And can any movie with such a killer soundtrack be that bad?
Two for one.
” Van Helsing , the one with Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale. I also really enjoy the 1998 Godzilla movie with Matthew Broderick.”
Van Helsing is one I have to admit to loving too. Anything cheesy that involves werewolves immediately wins me over.
Not just the first one!
“Apparently I’m a terrible person for loving all 3 of the Matrix trilogy,” admitted one user.
Another reassured them, “Believe me, you’re not. People just loved the first one and they set their standards way too high for the other two. […] It’s one of those things where you just have to suspend too much analytical thinking and just go for the ride.”
Perfecting the accent.
” Cobra . One of Stallone’s best.”
One reply said that Stallone spoke in perfect ‘Stallonese’ in this film and I cannot agree more.
Craziness galore.
” National Treasure is my favorite movie and it seems to be a polarizing one amongst critics and consumers alike. Unique plot, drama, romance, action, mystery, some comedic moments too! What’s not to like?”
Another true classic, I genuinely forgot people consider this movie to be bad. It’s so much fun!
The right amount of Wild.
” Wild Wild West has a scene where Will Smith is attacked by a henchman with knives for hands. Just as he is about to kick this henchman to his inevitable death (after hanging him, no less), Will Smith says, ‘That’s it, no more Mr. Knife Guy.’
The defence rests, your honour.”
A battle for the ages.
” Freddy vs. Jason. “
As a huge horror fan, especially the Nightmare on Elm Street series, I wholeheartedly agree. Freddy vs. Jason is fantastic.
A Christmas classic.
“Definitely Jingle All the Way , I try to watch it every December.”
Is it really the holiday season if you haven’t sat down and watched this incredible mess of a film?
“Glad I didn’t ask him to park the car…”
“Original Mortal Kombat .”
Someone who’d seen it recently attested, “Still holds up! Is it a masterpiece of cinema? No. Is it still entertaining as h**l? You bet your a*s!”
A hopeful future.
” Tank Girl . I’m a giant Tank Girl fan. To the point I own all the comics and have a full tg sleeve. I’ll always love this movie. It’s what got me interested in the first place.”
Some good news for other Tank Girl fans that Margot Robbie’s production company bought the rights to the franchise and plan to make another movie. Here’s hoping it’s just as iconic!
A more modern entry.
” Battle: Los Angeles . If you were to play a drinking game of ‘Spot the Tired Old Cliched Movie Tropes’ while watching it, you’d be hammered drunk within ten minutes and dead of alcohol poisoning by the time the movie was half-way through…but I love it!”
Certainly memorable.
” Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. “
Seeing as the replies to this one were filled with just quotes from the movie, it’s safe to say it stood out for lots of people.
Sign of the times.
” Mannequin , classic ’80s.”
It seems that many of the best ‘so bad it’s good’ movies come from the ’80s. I wonder if, in 40 years, movies that are coming out now will be viewed the same.
There *was* another way…
” Armageddon .”
Another fun fact provided by the replies, “I watch it all the time. Little bit of trivia – When [Affleck] asked, “Why don’t they train astronauts to drill instead? Seems easier.” Bay retorted with “Shut the [expletive] up Ben.”
Unwarranted.
“I absolutely love Joe Dirt . It gets a lot of guff from anyone I ask about it.”
Another answer that had tons of support — this movie means a lot to people. “I was searching for this answer. People hate this movie. […] It is such a great BE YOU kind of story that I think it is really important for people (and young adults) to see.”
Doomed.
” Doom (2005). Sorry but there are too many good Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson lines for it to be a bad film. I don’t make the rules.”
A fun fact about this movie that someone said in the replies, “I respect the [expletive] out of this movie because they actually did firearms training for the cast. You watch them they have better trigger discipline, tactical movement, and don’t cover (point guns at) each other like you see in most other movies.”
Another fighting game to movie entry…
” Street Fighter is probably my benchmark for ‘so bad, it’s good.’ It’s a full-on charcuterie board of cheesiness and ham.”
Still, it’s pretty sad that this went down as Raul Julia’s last film.
A childhood fever dream.
” The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl .”
Yes! I watched this movie religiously as a kid, bordering on obsessive. It’s a perfectly cheesy masterpiece with all the terrible graphics to boot. I still love it to this day.
Letsa go!
” Super Mario Bros . Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Italian plumbers. [Expletive] you, that’s funny.”
There’s definitely a trend of video game film adaptations not being high in quality, but having their cult followings none the less.
And to top it all off…
“[…] Venom .”
I saw this movie opening night with a friend and we’ve been obsessed with it ever since. It’s probably the most fun I’ve ever had in theaters, even though critics hated it. It will forever have a place in my heart.
