Like most vehicles, Jeeps feature four wheels and an engine.
That’s about where the similarities end, though. Jeeps are specialized vehicles that don’t really fit the mold of your typical car, SUV or pickup.
Case in point: you can take the windshields off if you want to.
Wait, the windshields come off?
Everyone knows that doors are optional with Jeeps, and that the cab of your typical Jeep is a more open-air affair than most vehicles.
Still, I think it would come as a surprise to most people to hear that the windshields can come off, too.
It’s become a bit of a TikTok sensation.
Of course, this news is trending for the same reason that most stuff is trending these days: thanks to various TikTok videos.
TikToker Brandom Haneline shared this video of a ride in his Jeep, sans windshield. It looks a bit breezy.
It’s engineered right into the vehicle’s design.
This TikTok, from Andrew Johnson, shows the clever way that it works: basically, the windshield portion of the frame can fold down over the hood of the Jeep, leaving nothing between the driver and the wind.
It’s kind of surprising.
It really shouldn’t be that surprising — Jeeps are the Swiss Army knives of the vehicle world, after all — but still, I don’t think most people knew about this feature. I’m not sure why this is a feature, exactly.
Responses were mixed.
While it might be thrilling to have wind blown in your face while you’re going really fast, the thought of getting hit with pebbles or bugs or whatever would make me a bit apprehensive about trying this.
Does that look like fun?
The one video shows the wind tunnel effect that happens when you’re driving 80 miles per hour with no windshield. The video’s funny, but it doesn’t look like it’s very fun to drive like this.
I have one question.
Why? Seriously, why? It just doesn’t seem like a feature that would be in demand.
This thread broke it down with a few plausible explanations. I’m not sure if they’re accurate, exactly, but they seem pretty reasonable.
The more you know.
Jeeps have always been able to do this, but the online community is just finding out about it now.
Do what you will with this information. And hey, if you own a Jeep, try cranking that windshield down, just for fun.
