Didn’t you love when your grandma would give you smart household hacks that are still useful today? I miss my grandma so much but not just for that reason.
Even though cleaning has evolved over the years there are still old proven ways that you can get rid of stains, clean messes and get stuff done in a jiffy. Check out these vintage tips and reminisce.
1. Removing Stains From Wood
I absolutely hate when I see water stains on my dining room table. But apparently, a bit of a conventional non-gel toothpaste works great.
2. Use Salt For Cleaning
Speaking of salt, you can also sprinkle your sink with it and its abrasive nature will help you scrub it clean. Who knew?
3. Clean Your Grill With An Onion
Don’t eat all the onions at your next BBQ! Save one to clean the grill afterward and keep the chemicals away from your grate.
4. Cleaning The Shower
The most natural way to get that soap scum off your shower wall is to scrub it with lemon. The acid will help break up gunk.
5. Cleaning The Toilet
Oh, the dreaded hard water stains in the toilet bowl! Just pour vinegar in the bowl, scrub, then follow up with baking soda and again with vinegar and voilà!
6. Don’t Forget To Clean The Shower Head
I confess I never do that! I really need to fill a plastic bag with vinegar and let it soak.
7. Unclog A Drain
Again baking soda and vinegar to the rescue. Pour one cup baking soda down the drain then rinse with hot vinegar. Watch the bubbles do their work.
8. Deodorize Your Kitty Litter
Having a cat is great but it’s not great having that cat smell in the house. A little baking soda in the litter works wonders.
9. Make Your Gargabe Disposal Smell Great
No fancy fixes here. Just plain old lemon peels will do the trick. No need for any nasty chemicals either. Whoa, how awesome.
10. Getting Rid Of Grease
It’s so annoying trying to get grease off your pots and pans, but nothing that a little baking soda can’t handle. Just pour and scrub.
11. How To Prevent Clothes From Fading
This one is really basic, just throw a tablespoon of salt in your washer’s water. Sodium chloride prevents clothes from fading. Awesome tip.
12. Remove Rust From Metal
If you can believe it, the acid in onions will act as a cleaning agent for your rusting knives. And you had that unassuming onion in your pantry all along.
13. Clean Up Broken Eggs
Ah, it’s so annoying. But cleaning that sticky mess gets easier if you just sprinkle salt on it and let it dry, then dust away.
I’m so happy I just stocked up on baking soda recently.
Who knew it practically was the magic ingredient in so many cleaning hacks? Ha! No more chemicals.
