Tipping culture is an age-old debate that’s not ending anytime soon, and this TikTok mother has entered the chat! Danielle Foster, @d.foster.president , watched her sixteen-year-old son go on his first date and splurge on his girlfriend.
She asked him about his experience, to which the minor replied affirmatively. Foster then asked how much he tipped in appreciation of the good service, and he replied, “$10.”
The conversation went downhill from there as Foster became disappointed, saying $10 didn’t match the $104 bill he had paid for the meal. She ordered him to return to the restaurant and increase the tip.
The Essence Of Tipping
Foster said she raised the 16-year-old better than he behaved, so she helped him out. She told him to get her card from her purse to take out an extra $20 for his tip. She even followed him back to the restaurant, all the while lecturing him about tipping.
A former server herself, the TikToker told her son that service providers get taxed on every sale; hence the tip is supposed to cover the deduction once they balance their books.
The boy looked like he had a smirk while receiving his lecture causing TikToker commenters to complain.
However, his mother defended him in a follow-up post alongside updates on the tipping situation.
Update From Foster
Foster started her update by saying her son returned to the restaurant and tipped $20, culminating in $30 on the $104 sale.
She further explained the circumstances surrounding his date, saying it was not the first time he went out with his girlfriend but was the first time he drove after getting his driver’s license.
He tipped $10 initially because he used a $50 gift card which reduced his actual payment by almost half. However, Foster told him that gift cards don’t absolve customers of tipping.
She addressed his smirk, saying he’s a straight As and Bs student and a good kid. His facial expression wasn’t an affront to his mother but an expression of awkwardness.
She Apologized For Embarrassing Her Son Online
Foster also addressed commenters complaining about her tone, saying it was aggressive towards her teenager. She described it as milder than usual, which surprised her children.
The TikToker added that they were close, so the teenager didn’t realize she was serious when she started speaking loudly.
She apologized to him for taping the conversation and opening him up to online trolls and bullies. Foster advised him to avoid the comments and focus on their relationship. Some of those comments included,
Grateful For Servers Worldwide
Foster explained that she took the incident personally because of her past as a server while raising her children as a single mother. She remarried her husband 11 years ago and has been financially better since. However, she hasn’t forgotten her past.
Foster told her followers to teach their children the importance of tipping and thanked all the servers worldwide.
