Naming your child after beloved characters from film, television, and books is nothing new. H**l, that’s how I got my name! The world is full of Hermiones, Crowleys, and Bellas – not to mention Leias, Lukes, and Hans! Parents love to pass on the names of their favorite characters to their kids – but for one parent, the Twilight inspired name she chose for her child was just too much for one Redditor to bear.
r/tragedeigh is one of my favorite subs of all time
It’s a subreddit dedicated to those classic names “creative” parents put a…unique spin on to make their kid stand out from the rest. We’re talking Lakynn, we’re talking Aynjel, we’re talking Lawryn. It’s also a place to discuss the frankly tragic things parents name their kids – you know, like after particularly weird pop culture characters.
Pictured above: the patron saint of tragedeigh: McKinli Hatch, whose viral photo about choosing her upcoming baby’s name became an intrinsic part of internet lore.
Twi-hards can probably guess what the name is
If you’re thinking, “Surely someone wouldn’t name their child that,” then you would be tragically incorrect. However, let’s keep it between us for now. The suspense is too good to not draw out just the tiniest bit for everyone else. Let’s let them marinate in this mystery for a minute.
One mom popped into the sub with a baffling tale
“I went to pick up my son from daycare, I was signing him out when I hear a mom calling for her kid. I thought surely my ears were deceiving me until she said it again,” chandandlerbong97 wrote.
It’s like watching a train wreck in slow motion. You know it’s coming, and you just can’t look away.
Well, there it is
“The name was Renesmee. Yes, like the alien baby from Twilight Renesmee.
I’m still horrified writing this post tbh. Out of all the names from Twilight, she chose the worst one!! It’s just so bad.
Rosalie, Bella, Alice, Victoria etc NONE of those were good enough?? I’m sick rn.”
Why on EARTH would you do that to your child? Oh god. I’m so sad for that kid. The bullying she’s going to experience…I can’t even imagine.
For those who don’t know
Renesmee is the name given to the child of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen from the Twilight book series. Her name is a mashup of Bella’s mother’s name (Reneé) and Edward’s adoptive mother, Esme. She was famously born by partially kind of…bursting out of Bella in an improvised c-section by way of Edward’s teeth. No, I’m not joking. Also, a grown werewolf man “imprinted” on her to first act as her sibling, and later her romantic partner. Again, not joking!
The comments got WILD.
“When your baby chews its own way out, what else are you going to name it?” Square-Platypus4029 commented.
Cranks_No_Start replied: “Xenomorph or Homelander.”
Those are objectively the correct answers.
Apparently, quite a few parents have done this
An alarming number of people replied that they all know a Renesmee, with Bright_Ices adding: “Renesmee hit peak popularity in 2022, with 165 baby girls given that name in the US. Last year, it was down to 136.”
WHY.
I would not have been able to hold back
“When my son was born in 2015 this young girl in the “new mom” class announced her baby’s name as Renesme. I about cracked up laughing,” Supa_fly2024 said.
Like…out of context, it could be a really pretty name! But it has a context, guys. And that context is Twilight.
I have some unfortunate news: it gets worse
rcikanovich shared: “I also know of a couple who named the oldest ‘Raenesme.’”
Wow! That’s somehow even worse, and I did not know that was possible! I feel like naming your kid like that entitles them to one free name change later in life. They shouldn’t be punished for their parents’ terrible taste!
Other users have seen all of this before
“I am a middle school counselor. We have a Renesmee. We also have a family of 4 where all the kids’ middle names are Harry Potter characters… and their first names are not better… the last name is also horrible. I wish I could put it on here, but it would be very identifying if anyone in my area read it,” BethyStewart78 admitted.
See, middle names I can kind of see. It has lower stakes than a first name, you know?
Do you know any Renesmees? How about kids named after pop culture characters? Tell me below!
