Baby names are just some things in society that are always heavily debated. Many people find some names to be cute and endearing while others think that they are totally strange and inappropriate. No matter what, someone has something negative to say about a baby’s name — even when it’s not their baby.
While some scope out those thick books in their local libraries for name ideas, others look back throughout history and pop culture to figure out the perfect name for their little bundle of joys.
Some names are classics
Some parents don’t have to look too hard to find name ideas, as they like to pull up names everyone knows in society. Those classic names that resonate with many individuals are easy to remember and definitely easy to choose.
Not everyone, though, will be fond of those classical names — it’s sometimes all about the execution and how you name them.
Siblings make things a bit complicated
When you have more than one child, picking a name can be a little challenging. You may love a name and think it’s perfect, but when it’s paired up beside another name, it can pay homage to something that you didn’t even realize.
Or, maybe you did realize, and it just doesn’t work out the way you intended to in the first place.
Recently, a Reddit user shared an awkward sibling name-pairing
On the Reddit thread name nerds, varvarvarvarya shared that her friend is pregnant with twins and has decided that she wants to name them Romeo and Juliet.
The names on their own, the Reddit user said, are great. But to have twin siblings named after lovers in one of the most famous stories of all time — she disagreed with it entirely.
It does seem a bit strange at first
Seeing as Romeo and Juliet were so in love with each other that they died to be together, it can raise an eyebrow or two when twins — brother and sister — are named after them.
Clearly it’s a well-known romance that stands the test of time (hey, it’s even still taught in high school classrooms today), so it’ll always be a bit awkward, right?
The mom didn’t see it as strange at first
The Reddit user shared that her friend didn’t find it so strange until she said something that is. She said that if people truly “found it weird,” she would consider choosing different names for her twins.
However, the whole “naming after well-known characters” seems to run in her family, as her stepbrother named his twins Cassandra and Apollo.
Some people online agreed — it’s too weird
Many Reddit users said the names are definitely not good for siblings, let alone twins.
“Personally, I would never use twin (or even sibling) names of well known/famous romantic pairings. I do think it’s weird. I agree that Cassandra and Apollo is also weird considering the mythos surrounding the pair,” wrote Inareskai.
Others even said they’ve refrained from other names they’ve liked
Blind_Pythia1996 shared with the Reddit thread that she loved the names “Adam” and “Eve,” but she would never name her children those names, seeing as they are well known and it’s extremely strange to name siblings after two people who are known to be lovers or even romantically involved with each other.
Not to mention, they may even read the book in school one day
“They’re the same age. They’re going to be going through the awkwardness of puberty at the same time, and right around that age there’s going to be this suggestion in the air based on their names (which they can’t escape) that they should be hot for each other, and all the other kids are going to be pointing it out to them in English class,” asked AngelThrones4sale.
Many said there are other names to choose from, too
Some online users also pointed out that dozens of names in literature and mythology are not lovers. For example, in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, Sebastian and Viola are actual twins.
That way, people would know it’s literature-based, and it would make that much more sense, seeing as they are also twins.
Overall, people felt the mom was setting her kids up for failure
As kids get older, bullying will happen.
“Remember that kids can be cruel and this could make it a “thing” if they’re loving toward each other. Especially in this depraved internet where suggestive sibling stuff is the taboo of choice. And if they’re made to feel weird about being close, the opposite could happen,” wrote Hola-Fabi.
Do you agree, is the name inappropriate?
