Do you believe in ghosts? What about ghouls or goblins? For those in the subreddit r/Paranormal, all of those and more are very real – or very thrilling to talk about! If you love a good spooky story, then you might enjoy this post from a desperate mom worried about supposed mimic in her home. And the worst part? She thinks it’s taking the form of her daughter!
So, what’s a mimic?
A mimic is a type of ghost that can copy – aka mimic – another being, whether living or dead. Mimics can be benevolent or malevolent, take whatever form they choose, and are generally pretty terrifying. Whether you believe in the supernatural or not, the idea of a being that can mimic your loved ones makes for some top tier spooky content.
Onto the story!
Redditor Creative-Share-5350 posted the following to the r/Paranormal sub:
“So my daughter’s room is across the hall from my room. She keeps hearing me screaming her name in the middle of the night! She’s actually woken me up a couple times by yelling back and then as I’m waking up I’m so confused on why she’s yelling at me lol the last time it happened was a few days ago…. However this time I woke up cause I heard my voice yelling my daughter’s name and I’m positive it wasn’t coming out of my mouth?!?(freaked me right out). We live in the country in Ontario Canada and we all have ac units in our rooms so we never hear much of anything usually! Are these “mimics” a real thing? What happens if you answer it? Or what can happen? Why are there such things if they are real and what do they look like?”
Some users believed it was a true mimic.
Quite a few people said that this sounds like classic mimic with bad intentions.
“It sounds like if this thing is already in your house and mimicking you it’s well settled in. Have you or your daughter done any “spirit communication” like EVPs or Ouija boards? Could you ask her but don’t be judgemental about it she is scared enough as it is. Also set up a camera in her room.” Downtown_big_4845.
I’m more of a “use Ouija boards as Halloween decor” gal myself, but I know there’s people out there who take them very seriously! I wouldn’t recommend doing any kind of Ouija thing with a kid, though. That could really scare them!
Others decided to share their own scary experiences with mimics
“This reminds me of the story my mom told me years ago. When we were toddlers (twin brother) and we (and my dad) were sleeping. She was staying up late, couldn’t sleep and she hears us (kids) start to scream, and so she runs upstairs and we’ve fallen out of our beds, she puts us back in bed and we settle down. She goes back downstairs and 10 minutes later it happens again, she runs back upstairs and as she’s putting us back in our beds yet again, she then hears my dad start to scream and hears him falling out of bed. She runs to him but can’t lift him back into bed, and then she hears us fall out of our beds one at a time while screaming. The way she tells the story she says it went on all night, she was running back and forth bw my brother and I putting us back in our beds and soothing us, and running to my dad and soothing him while he lay on the floor. She said we were all sleeping and never woke up. I have no memory of this, neither does my brother or dad, and the next day she threw out anything “paranormal” she had in the house,” Rachl56 shared.
Others suggested the mimic’s intentions may not be malevolent
funinthemoon said: “I wouldnt worry. They are earthbound souls that get board. Just tell them to stop or ignore them completely. I know it doesnt sound easy but they are just tryin to get a rise out of you. They are not gonna harm you.”
I love the idea that those that have passed on just kinda hang out and sometimes get bored of their immortality. Without the ability to use phones, surf the internet, or touch anything, who wouldn’t resort to messing with the living from time to time?
Terrifyingly, someone suggested it may not be a mimic at all
One user suggested that the creature may not be a mimic, but a Wendigo. According to Britannica, a Wendigo is “a mythological cannibalistic monster in the spiritual tradition of North American Algonquian-speaking tribes. It is associated with winter and described as either a fearsome beast that stalks and eats humans or as a spirit that possesses humans, causing them to turn into cannibals.”
Hey, no thank you! I’m gonna pass on this one.
One suggested there could be another person in the house
JAragon7 said: “No clue about the paranormal aspects, but I would suggest checking your house inside out to make sure there isn’t anyone else hiding. I’ve read so many stories of people hiding in secret compartments of a property and living there without the owners noticing.”
This is true, and it’s called Phrogging! It tends to happen in homes with attics or bonus spaces that aren’t accessed regularly. Don’t worry, though – the Phrogging phenomenon is very rare.
Many users had more practical suggestions
newfoundcontrol said: Do a sleep study to see if you have anything going on medically. Even if you don’t think was coming out of your mouth, you can’t be sure depending on how deep of a sleep you were in.
Another user agreed, adding that she should buy a camera to record herself sleeping before going to a sleep specialist. This is the smartest thing to do, and the most likely to lead to a real answer.
And even more agreed the person yelling is actually the original poster
It’s possible she was still too groggy from sleep to figure out where the voice was coming from.
“One of the most common type of sightings are people waking and seeing g something. When you wake suddenly the chemicals thet make you sleep and dream are still present. You have a waking dream. One of the worst times to trust your senses are when you wake,” said Miichl80.
And another added that chemicals could be to blame
“Before you start jumping to conclusions, test your home for carbon monoxide. Your home could have elevated levels of carbon monoxide and this may be attributing to hearing things in your sleep. Enough of it can make you hallucinate. Too much of it and 😵”
This one is important. Carbon monoxide poisoning is extremely dangerous and easy to miss – getting a detector in your home is a must!
