Children’s play has been a topic of contested debate for many years. On the one side, people don’t believe that dolls and toys have an effect on children’s social and emotional development. On the other side, researchers find that toys do have an impact on children’s development. Toys are certainly part of a process called gender role socialization , in which children learn behavior and attitudes considered appropriate regarding their assigned s*x at birth.
Mattel, the creators of the classic contested hyper-feminine doll, Barbie, are switching things up. They’ve just released gender-inclusive dolls so that children can write their own scripts.

Over the years, Mattel has worked to diversify their dolls in many ways. Increasing waist lines, including other races, and highlighting inspiring women are just a few ventures.
In a statement , senior vice president of Mattel Fashion Doll Design, Kim Culmone, said, “Through research, we heard that kids don’t want their toys dictated by gender norms.”
And so, the company finally listened and delivered.
Now, the doll powerhouse is tackling gender diversity with their Creatable World doll series.
Kids have six dolls to choose from, each with their own unique set of trendy clothing, accessories, and hair.
Their slogan is “All welcome,” and their mission is to provide agency and freedom for kids to create their own character.
What’s amazing is that each box contains over 100 customizable looks.
Maybe one day they want their character to have short hair and wear a dress, and maybe another day they want them to have longer locks and wear some cool sneaks and jeans.
The choice for their own scripted play is now completely theirs!
Everyone is unique, and Mattel wanted to create a doll that highlighted that.
The dolls are $30 and can be purchased from Mattel’s online store , as well as Amazon, Target, and Walmart.
This is a big step in the fight for representation.
