Police dramas (and even comedies) are facing a unique problem right now. While the world has been focused on the unfair and unjust treatment of people of color by some members of law enforcement, these shows must decide whether to touch on the Black Lives Matter movement or to actively avoid the subject.
Lucifer has made its decision.
*Lucifer* is one of Netflix’s biggest smash hits.
The show, which follows Lucifer himself as he runs his own nightclub in LA and becomes a consultant for the LAPD, is hugely popular with tons of fans who are excited after the show recently got confirmed for a sixth and final season .
However, because *Lucifer* does involve a police department, the showrunners have been debating whether or not they should touch on the recent Black Lives Matter movement revival.
“When we got back to the [writers] room, we started looking at the fact that we’re a cop show and in what ways have we contributed or not addressed the systemic issues of the police department,” said one of the show’s writers and executive producer Ildy Modrovich.
“We decided we wanted to speak to it. So we’re actually doing a story that speaks directly to it, and we’re super excited about it,” she continued.
“I feel nervous about it because I want to get it right,” Modrovich said.
“What we did want to do was speak to the cultural reckoning we’re all going through and, I think, we’ll be continuing to go through, and our place in it and our responsibility to say something,” fellow executive producer Joe Henderson added.
He explained they wanted to “go at it through our characters’ eyes from an emotional place and not a preachy place,”
“To really look at the situation socially, emotionally and have it resonate on a deeper level than just words or rhetoric,” he added.
What do you think? Is this a good call from the showrunners? Let us know your opinion!
