It started when Kim tweeted advertising face masks made by her shape wear company, SKIMS.

While some have criticized Kim for trying to profit off the current pandemic with masks that are non-medical grade , the issue arose from Kim referring to the coloring of the masks as “5 shades of nudes,” implying they would match skin tones.
While the ‘nude’ shade on the lighter skinned models seemed appropriate, the masks on the Black model were not a skin tone match.

In her tweet , Kim included an image of a Black model wearing an actual black mask in a shade referred to on the site as “onyx,” rather than in a brown toned mask that would match her skin tone.
Fans immediately pointed out the inaccuracy in Kim labelling the mask as ‘nude.’

One fan suggested that this mix up may have been on purpose, tweeting , “I feel like she had to of known that it was offensive. How did the line make it this far without anyone telling her?”
Some people defended Kim, while others criticized her wording choice.

“Black women deserve more than your mediocrity & laziness,” one fan responded , while others pointed out that there is a shade closer to the brown skin tone of the model available on the website .
