Katy Perry is under fire for allegedly mom-shaming an American Idol contestant during the judges’ feedback segment. The 38-year-old mother of one made some harsh remarks which fans consider bullying against the 25-year-old mother of three, Sara Beth Liebe.
The Awkward First Moment
The contestant, Liebe, sang Amy Winehouse’s You Know I’m No Good but didn’t impress Perry. Before her rendition, Liebe introduced herself saying she has three children to which Perry reacted “rudely.”
Liebe Fangirling Over Perry
The Last Friday Night singer jumped out of her seat and exclaimed asking how a young woman could have that many children. When Liebe said she’d pass out if Perry left the table, the singer replied,
Perry Mom-Shames The Contestant
The contestant continued her introduction saying she loves going to karaoke with her friends when Perry asked if Liebe is living her dream. The singer continued saying,
Liebe Fumbles Her Performance
Liebe said she was still processing when Perry urged her to start her performance. Her first delivery of Winehouse’s classic needed to be better for the judges, and the California Girls singer asked Liebe to do better.
An Accidental American Idol
When the mother of three continued her song, Perry kept giving her pointers, but Liebe couldn’t meet the expectation. Eventually, Perry gave up and called her an accidental contestant.
One Last Word
Co-judge Luke Bryan, 46, wasn’t as harsh as his counterpart. However, Perry didn’t let Liebe leave without warning her that her music career wouldn’t work out unless it’s a dream she’s willing to flog to the end.
Golden Ticket
Despite her harsh remarks, Perry voted for the contestant to move to the next stage. Co-judge Lionel Richie, 73, voted against her.
Netizens Give Their Two Cents
The internet had much to say about Perry’s assessment of Liebe’s performance. Twitter users dubbed the mother of one a mean girl for shaming Liebe over her life choices.
Unique In Her Situation
One user explained that Liebe’s difference makes her unique and argued that her voice was better than many of the other contestants.
A Brave Action From Liebe
A mother commented saying that it’s rare for parents especially mothers to consider their dreams when raising children and Liebe is brave for pursuing hers. The commenter added,
Gives People The Ick
Another commenter said adult women being mean is an ick while explaining that it was sad for Perry to berate Liebe from the beginning.
It Was A Funny Moment
Perry had some supporters who found her comical expressions funny while another person wished her luck with cancel culture.
Just Doing Her Job
Some Perry supporters said the singer was only doing her job and being brutally honest. One user reminded the commenters that people like Simon Cowell exist, so Perry’s criticism was the least of their worries.
Perry Has Nothing On Simon Cowell
Cowell is one of the greatest villains of reality TV singing shows especially his infamous exchange with Jennifer Hudson.
The Infamous Hudson Vs. Cowell Situation
During her American Idol season, Cowell told Hudson that her voice wasn’t good enough for singing Barry Manilow’s Weekend in New England. She placed 7th on the show while Fantasia won.
No Hard Feelings
Cowell and Hudson made up after almost twenty years of that infamous incident. The singer said the harsh criticism led her to the Oscar-winning role of Effie White in Dreamgirls.
TV Isn’t The Same
Cowell has since softened and doesn’t give as many harsh criticisms as before. Television has changed since 2004 such that harsh criticisms of live shows would reach the internet for all to see.
Cancel Culture Rears Its Head
With cancel culture, netizens blow statements made by celebrities out of proportion and use it as an excuse to encourage people to stop supporting them.
Would This Blow Over?
Like many internet stories, someone else would become the focus soon and make people forget about Perry. It’s also possible that she’ll never live this down because the internet always remembers.
