Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson opened up about how much becoming parents has changed them, not just in their personal lives, but in their work too.
They spoke about it during a press event at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18 while promoting their intense new movie Die, My Love.
Becoming a parent really flips your world
“Having children changes everything. It changes your whole life. It’s brutal and incredible,” said Lawrence. She has a 3-year-old son named Cy and a newborn with her husband, Cooke Maroney.
Pattinson, who has a 1-year-old daughter with Suki Waterhouse, added, “I think, in the most unexpected ways, having a baby gives you the biggest trove of energy and inspiration afterward. It’s a different kind of energy.”
Jennifer’s kids now guide all her work choices
Lawrence said that now, every work decision runs through her family first.
“Not only do they go into every decision of if I’m working, where I’m working, when I’m working — they’ve taught me,” she said.
She feels emotions more deeply than ever
She shared how motherhood changed how she connects with feelings, which is a big part of her job.
“I mean, I didn’t know that I could feel so much, and my job has a lot to do with emotions, and they’ve opened up the world to me,” she said.
“It’s almost like feeling like a blister or something, so sensitive.”
Creativity feels different now, in a good way
Talking about her two little ones, she said, “They’ve changed my life, obviously, for the best, and they’ve changed me creatively. I highly recommend having kids, if you want to be an actor.”
Pattinson’s take on it came with a laugh
Pattinson joked that talking about fatherhood is a tough topic for guys.
He said, “It’s literally just like what Jennifer said. I’m here just to support.”
“Ever since she was born, it’s reinvigorated the way I approach work, and yeah, you’re a completely different person the next day.”
Their movie tells a pretty heavy story
Their new film Die, My Love had its debut at Cannes this year. It’s based on a 2017 novel by Ariana Harwicz and centers on a new mom going through postpartum depression and psychosis.
The film was directed by Lynne Ramsay, known for We Need to Talk About Kevin, and it’s in the running for the Palme d’Or.
This could be a big comeback for Lawrence
This movie is Jennifer’s first since her 2023 comedy No Hard Feelings. It’s also her return to more serious roles, the kind that could get her back into the awards talk.
Her last Oscar nom was in 2016 for Joy. She won Best Actress in 2013 for Silver Linings Playbook.
The audience gave a huge response at Cannes
When the movie premiered in France, the cast and crew got a nine-minute standing ovation. The reaction was loud and long.
Pattinson had a funny story about dancing
In a recent video chat with GQ, Pattinson and his Mickey 17 director Bong Joon Ho talked about a scene where he had to dance in Die, My Love.
“It seems to be in almost every movie, there’s some moment where they’re like, ‘Here’s the dancing scene.’ Except for Mickey,” he said.
He laughed as he described it: “And it came to the day and I was sweating so much — the insides of my trousers were wet [with sweat]. That’s a little exaggeration.”
The film doesn’t have a release date yet
There’s no official date set for Die, My Love to hit theaters yet, but it’s already getting a lot of buzz.
