Tragic news out of Brazil this week, as Brazilian police reported the deaths of Aline Tamara Moreira de Amorim, 37, and Beatriz Tavares da Silva Faria, 27, off the coast of São Paulo.
The two influencers spent the day at a yacht party
New York Post reports that Amorim and Faria were part of a group of influencers in attendance at a yacht party off the coast of São Paulo on September 29th.
The group of six chartered a speedboat only built to hold five, according to the boat’s captain.
The captain was ordered to transport them
Despite the boat being over capacity, the captain was ordered to take the six influencers. The vessel struggled under the extra weight and choppy waves, eventually tossing the passengers overboard into rough waters.
The captain spoke with police after the incident
He told them he did his best to save his passengers, but Amorim and Faria were without life jackets.
Sao Vincente Police Commissioner Marcos Alexandra Alfino reported that the women were concerned the life-saving devices would impact their photos.
Amorim and Faria both drowned
“Some didn’t want to put them on because they were taking selfies,” the Commissioner reportedly said. “They said that they get in the way of their tanning.”
Both bodies were eventually recovered
Amorim, who had posted a snap of herself aboard the yacht that very day (shown above), was found deceased after washing up on the shore of Itaquitanduva Beach later that week.
Faria was found at sea
Brazil’s Maritime Firefighters recovered her body after it drifted out to sea, according to police.
The investigation is still ongoing
“All this is being determined very calmly to conclude if the fatalities were based on recklessness or negligence,” Alfino said, according to the Post.
A survivor recounted the terrifying moments after the crash
Vanessa Audrey da Silva said she quickly put her life vest on, eventually clutching a rock for safety after the boat sank.
It was terrifying
“There was a moment in the water when no one could see anyone,” she said. “I was fighting for my life.”
Our thoughts are with the families of the deceased
There’s a great deal to learn from the unnecessary deaths of Amorim and Faria, but the most important is this: aesthetics are never worth more than your life.
