Canadians have contributed a number of great things to society.
The WonderBra, Zippers, Hawaiian Pizza and even basketball. But did Canadians also invent the Canadian Tuxedo? Well, yes and no.
Here’s the sitch on how this famous outfit got its name.
Let’s have a little history lesson, shall we?
In case you’ve never heard of the Canadian Tuxedo term before, it’s when an outfit consists of both a denim top and denim bottom.
You could also wear a tuxedo made out of denim material buuut I don’t think you’d want to do that.
Britney and JT rocked the trend once in matching ensembles.

Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears solidified their spot in pop culture history for the matching all denim looks they wore to the 2001 American Music Awards.
It’s hard to say if that was a good or a bad thing but all I know is that at the end of the day, JT’s patchwork jeans walked so today’s Canadian Tuxedo could run.
In more recent years, the trend has regained its popularity.
The Canadian Tux is pretty much a pop culture staple these days. Just the other day, supermodel Gigi Hadid turned 24 and threw a denim-themed birthday party where she had everyone show up in all denim looks.
The history behind the Canadian Tuxedo name, however, dates back to way before JT and Britney’s moment in 2001.
The tale goes a little something like this:
Way, way back in 1951, American singer Bing Crosby was visiting Vancouver, Canada when he was denied entry to a hotel because he and his friends were wearing all denim.
The hotel management eventually recognized the star and made an exception for him but, as always, news spreads pretty quickly.
Levi Strauss and Co. caught wind of the story and had their designers make a custom denim tuxedo.

That way, they said, Bing would never have a problem wearing his jeans anywhere, including fancy hotels.
Inside the jacket, Levi’s threw a little more shade to the Canadian hotel with a “Notice to All Hotel Men” that the denim was in fact an appropriate material to wear and that anyone wearing it should be allowed inside of the fanciest hotels.
Bing ended up loving his denim suit and wore it to a handful of movie premieres and thus officially birthing the Canadian Tuxedo.
