When a couple is about to have a child, they can sometimes find that someone else in their family has put as much thought into what their kid should be named as they have.
For instance, there are three cousins named Maria in my family purely because that’s what my great-grandmother of the same name demanded. Although she might have regretted this decision in my mom’s case since she apparently ended up bearing some facial resemblance to this woman’s sworn enemy.

But while some may be insistent on what a baby’s name should be, others will find themselves fighting hard against a name that’s already been chosen.
And as we can see in the case of one unfortunate couple, it turns out that it’s possible to get both problems at once from a relative.
While explaining the decision behind his soon-to-be-born son’s name, the man we’re about to hear from established that gaming has always been important to him and to his wife.
As he wrote in a Reddit post , they even met while playing a game online so it could be argued that this child would’ve never existed if it weren’t for video games.
It’s also worth noting that this is the family’s first grandchild and that the man’s mother has been pressuring him to name the child after her fallen brother. However, this person died when the man was a year old so he has no memories of him.
So instead, the couple has agreed on a name with more personal significance to them, if from an unlikely source.
Because Arthur Morgan’s story from Red Dead Redemption 2 moved the man to tears for the first time in all his years of gaming, his wife suggested naming their son Arthur and making Morgan his middle name.
It’s also the kind of name that a lot of people would never trace to a video game. As the man said, “It isn’t as if we’re naming him Sonic the Hedgehog or Donkey Kong.”
Nonetheless, the man’s mother was furious once his brother revealed where the child’s name came from.
As he put it, “She actually drove 30 minutes to our house so she could bang on our door and berate us in person for honoring someone who doesn’t actually exist over her flesh-and-blood sibling.”
And while he understands why this is a touchy subject for her, he and his wife are standing firm on the name no matter how she feels about it.
In his words, “She walked out and told us that she would have nothing to do with our son and would never acknowledge him as family.”
So while he feels the same way about this name choice, the man now feels conflicted because he has otherwise had a good relationship with his mother and it’ll hurt deeply if she makes good on this threat.
But as far as the Reddit community he reached was concerned, this is neither something that she has a say over nor a name that warrants such an extreme threat.
As one user said , “I was prepared to hear some weird name that your poor kid would be saddled with but Arthur and Morgan are classic names. Your wife is right you do need to stand your ground. Your mother is using emotional blackmail and she can not be rewarded for that. I hope she realizes she’s overreacting and will come around once she sees her grandchild.”
In the words of another, “You get to name your own child. If your mother wants to sulk about it and be super butt hurt enough to disown you then she picked an unworthy hill to die on.”
One also found her insistence on naming the child after her brother strange, saying , “Your child, you decide. Children are people, not memorials.”
And that’s not even addressing the fact that she’s threatening to all but deny her love to her grandchild over something he has absolutely no control over.
