The Met Gala is here! The star-studded fashion event took place last night on Monday May 5 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
While everyone gathers to see the high-profile fashion looks, fans have noticed one icon missing from the event this year and she has explained exactly why she couldn’t make it.
This year’s theme was celebrating Black fashion
The 2025 Met Gala theme was a celebration of the history of Black fashion and dandyism, with the theme being ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’.
The evening had a glittering lineup with the likes of Pharrell Williams, Janelle Monáe, Usher, A$AP Rocky and Doechii in attendance.
But one star was missing
If you’ve been following the Met Gala for a few years now, you’ll know that Sarah Jessica Parker is a longtime darling of the event.
The Sex and the City star has been a consistent attendee of the event for nearly three decades, but she couldn’t make it this year.
She explained why she was absent
The 60-year-old actress, who has been synonymous with the Met Gala since the mid-90s, explained why she couldn’t make it this year.
“I have to work,” she told Entertainment Tonight ahead of the event.
She confirmed she was excited to tune in anyway
“But there’s gonna be so much to see, and I look forward to seeing what everybody does. And I can’t wait to see how they interpret the theme and the sort of homework they did for the assignment – the very joyful assignment,” the actress said.
“I care a lot about [the Met Gala] and I want to try to honor the curators, and everyone who’s inspired the moment for the people who get to attend,” she added.
The theme sheds light on Black style and influence
With the Met Gala being held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the 2025 theme, Superfine, serves hand-in-hand with the museum’s coming exhibit Tailoring Black Fashion, which celebrates 300 years of Black style and influence.
SJP has a long history with the Met Gala
The actress has a long standing connection with the high-profile fashion event stretching back to 1995, long before the first episode of Sex and the City aired.
Back then, she made headlines for pulling a DIY look with a secondhand dress and doing her own hair and makeup.
She made headlines again in 2006
In 2006, the actress showed up to the Met Gala in a tartan gown by Alexander McQueen, paying homage to British fashion.
She then returned in 2011 in another McQueen dress as the event was paying tribute to the late designer at the time.
People always expect a look from her
Throughout the 2010s, SJP became a staple of the Met Gala, with fans always expecting to see her rocking up in a show stopping outfit that perfectly encapsulates storytelling via fashion.
So realizing she was missing was disappointing to some. But whatever the work is that has kept us from seeing SJP at the Met Gala this year, we can’t wait to see it!
