Look, these are tough times for our hair. I haven’t seen my stylist in over three months and my balayage is disappearing so fast I could cry! And while it’s tempting to try to DIY my blonde highlights, I have learned from celebs on social media that doing your own hair often goes wrong.
The latest celeb to prove my thesis is Ellen DeGeneres!

Ellen took to social media to celebrate her mom Betty’s 90th birthday. What an amazing milestone!
The talkshow host posted a video montage of some of Betty’s greatest hits and, honestly, it was so sweet!
And what better to way celebrate this momentous occasion than with a lil’ hair revamp, right?
Just like a little celebratory haircut.
Just like a LITTLE off the ends.
Just like an inch or two trimmed off, pls.
Well that’s absolutely *not* what Ellen did to Betty’s hair, lol.
Ellen told her mom she was “just taking the edges off” while she took a friggin’ ELECTRIC RAZOR TO BETTY’S GORGEOUS, WHITE HAIR!
“Why am I letting her do this?” Ellen’s mom laughed to the camera.
I think Betty realized real quick she was getting a FULL buzzcut from her daughter, lol.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! SAY BYE BYE TO YOUR HAIR!
“You don’t use scissors?” Betty asked her daughter.
“Believe me, you don’t want me using any scissors,” Ellen replied.
Now I’m no hairdresser, but I feel like scissors can give a BIT MORE CONTROL, NO?!
When asked if she liked the final result, Betty replied “No, not yet.”
UGH BETTY, we have all been there girl!
Who hasn’t turned around in their salon chair and been horrified with their haircut at least once in their life?!
While some fans liked the new ‘do, others questioned why Ellen shaved her mom’s head when she said she only wanted a trim, which is TBH, a *very* fair question.
It doesn’t feel like a great gift to me!
What about a BIRKIN BAG FOR BETTY?!
“Poor thing,” commented one fan. “You ruined it!” said another.
Everyone who has ever had a bad haircut was feeling Betty’s pain in this moment. It was PALPABLE.
Hair is so important to so many of us!
People began to share their stories of taking care of their elderly parents and giving them haircuts. “…I took care of my mom and dad for seven years I never cut their hair like that,” shared one fan.
“She was being a bully,” one user remarked.
Some people began speculating Ellen did this to Betty’s hair on purpose for a joke. Ya know, for a lil’ LAUGH! For a BIT!
Personally I believe milestone birthdays and sweet mothers should not be allowed to be used as jokes!
Hopefully Betty is warming up to her new haircut!
For what it’s worth, I think she looks absolutely adorable!
