All over social media , when one thing pops up, it seems that everyone wants to come over and try it. Once a few people hop onto the trend, it’s as if it spreads like wildfire. Who can forget when we first began the Covid-19 lockdown and everyone was making bread and whipped coffee ?
Thanks to TikTok and Instagram, once something hits the internet, it’s not long before everyone wants to try it out for themselves.
Recently, the latest beverage everyone loves is a mix of two things we all need.

The latest TikTok popular drink happens to be a combo of two things we all need in our lives: protein and coffee. “Proffee” as people are now calling it, is when many people on TikTok take a protein shake or protein powder and combine it with their iced coffee.
All across TikTok, people are trying it out.

Many TikTok users share their recipes and what their favorite ” proffee ” beverage happens to be. For many people, it’s a great way to get a good boost in the morning and also to get protein in the morning, if they may not have enough time to get protein in every meal that day.
A lot of people who have had bypass surgery seem to enjoy the proffee trend, as well.

In the 5 million videos that come up on the # proffee hashtag on TikTok, many people who enjoy this beverage are those who have had stomach or bypass surgery. When individuals have their stomachs shrunk, they have less room to have meals throughout the day. So, including protein in their coffee gives them two things in one.
However delicious it may be, is proffee healthy?

While everyone has their own concoction for making proffee, we are all wondering: is it healthy and safe to have protein and coffee every day, or even on a regular basis? It’s always important to know nutritional factors and whether or not it’s safe to have proffee.
For those who skip breakfast, adding protein to their coffee is a good idea.

Megan Wong, a registered dietician at AlgaeCal , spoke to BuzzFeed and shared that if you are someone who has breakfast every day, adding protein to your coffee is not necessarily needed. But if you are typically someone who skips breakfast, the added protein can replace the skipped meal.
Also, you want to be sure you are making a proffee that is right for you.

You want to be sure you are adding the proper ingredients to your proffee, as some have more protein than others. Make sure to measure how much protein you are adding so you don’t overdo it. Some people need more protein than others, like those who work out on a regular basis.
In addition, some protein shakes can have high sugar content.

It’s important to also read the ingredients on every box and bottle that you are drinking, as many protein shakes have tons of sugar added to them. With the addition of the sugar and syrups many people put in their coffee, it’s important to ensure you aren’t over-sugaring things.
Other dieticians say that it’s important to “avoid” too much coffee.

While protein consumption is important, Carissa Galloway, registered dietitian and nutrition consultant for Premier Protein, says individuals should watch their coffee and caffeine intake and limit it to 400 milligrams of coffee per day.
In addition, not all people can consume coffee on a regular basis.

Those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or who suffer from anxiety and panic disorders should be careful with how much coffee they take in. Galloway told BuzzFeed that trying proffee may not be for these individuals, however, they can start off with decaf coffee if they want to try it out.
And, if you are someone who works out and lifts weights, proffee may be great for you.

If you are a regular gym rat and enjoy going to the gym to pump some iron, proffee could be a great way to start your day before a workout.
“The protein in the drink will help to rebuild and repair muscle damage during and after the workout, while the coffee will provide an energy boost to help you perform at your best and keep you mentally sharp and motivated throughout your workout,” Joe Johnson, certified nutritionist and owner of 9 to 5 Nutrition , told BuzzFeed.
If you are going to try proffee, here are some tips.

Be sure that you are drinking it early enough in the day that you don’t leave yourself wired all night long—as coffee can keep you up late. In addition, check the sugar to be sure you don’t add excess sugar to your coffee. And, if you are lactose intolerant, be sure to avoid protein powders with lactose and soy.
