I don’t know about you, but I’ve had my share of great school teachers throughout my academic years. Teachers have different methods, that’s for sure. Some are very patient and lenient, while others prefer a much stricter approach. But you can say one thing about all good teachers — they are there to inspire their students to do better in school and be better human beings.
One teacher did just that, and she recently received a very welcomed send-off from the entire school. Let’s check this story out.
Dr. Sheridan Steelman recently decided to retire.
She was a teacher at the Northview High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan, for 50 years. Wow! So the time has come for her to retire, but she definitely didn’t expect the send-off she received from her beloved school.
Get this – she started her career when she was only 22 years old.
Oh, my goodness. But on her last day at school at the age of tender 72-years old, the students couldn’t let this woman go without a proper farewell.
Here’s what the students and fellow teachers did.
Both the students and teachers alike surprised Dr. Steelman by lining up in the hallway towards the exit and giving this wonderful teacher a well-deserved standing ovation. Isn’t that so sweet, or what?
Needless to say, this teacher was visibly touched.
As she witnessed this kind act, tears started to fall down her cheek. A colleague had to run up to her to hand her a handkerchief. Something tells me that she wasn’t the only person crying.
I bet there were no dry eyes in the room.
When Dr. Steelman walked out of her classroom for the very last time, two lines of applauding students met her on each side. She even did a little twirl to show her excitement, and a radiant smile never left her face.
That must’ve been quite the moment for everyone.
This praise was definitely warranted. During her time at the school, Dr. Steelman taught English, but she also took some time to earn a Ph.D. She even wrote a book that will be published soon, all the while raising six kids.
It was actually the school’s principal who orchestrated this elaborate send-off.
After all, he has known Dr. Steelman for over 24 years. He asked fellow teachers and students to line up in the hallway and kept it a secret from Dr. Steelman.
This was one teacher who loved her job.
According to the principal, Dr. Steelman constantly adjusted and adapted her teaching methods to serve their students over the years, to continue to promote learning. If that’s not good teaching, then I don’t know what is.
Aww, wasn’t that such a sweet gesture?
Teachers like Dr. Steelman definitely deserve praise like this. This dedicated teacher wished she could stay at the school even longer, so the decision to retire wasn’t an easy one for her. I bet looking at all the beautiful faces of her students made it even harder for her to leave such a rewarding career. Hopefully, she can come to visit them from time to time.
