Tech billionaire Elon Musk and the President of the United States Donald Trump have been in a public feud since Thursday, taking jabs at one another online.
Amid these arguments, Musk proposed the creation of a new political party after having endorsed the Republican president in his 2024 campaign.
He suggested it on social media
Musk proposed the idea of creating a new political party on Thursday, taking to X/Twitter to share the thought with his 220 million followers.
The idea could escalate the feud between Trump and the billionaire, who were once allies.
Musk posted a poll
In a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ poll posted to X, Musk asked his followers, “Is it time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle?”
The question came in between jabs at the American president.
He checked the results a day later
One day after posting the poll, Musk quoted his own tweet noting that 80% of the poll’s respondents voted ‘Yes’.
He wrote, “The people have spoken. A new political party is needed in America to represent the 80% in the middle! And exactly 80% of people agree 😂 This is fate.”
One fan suggested a name for the party
Under his tweet, a fan suggested he name the party “America Party,” an idea he endorsed, replying, ““America Party” has a nice ring to it. The party that actually represents America!”
The name resembles that of America PAC, the political action committee that Musk founded last year and used to spend $239 million in the endorsement of Trump and other Republican candidates in 2024.
Will he actually start a new political party?
It’s a task easier said than done. Ballot access in most states is already granted to the two biggest parties in America, Democratic and Republican, as well as some of the larger third parties.
To create a new political party and actually have a chance at making it big would mean navigating state-by-state rules for ballot access, which can be quite complicated.
It’s unclear how serious he is about it
It’s not exactly clear how serious Musk – the richest man in the world – is about creating a new political party to break with the Republican Party.
Only last month, Musk said he was planning on dialing back his political spending, as per CBS News.
Musk got into a feud with Trump on Tuesday
The battle between Musk and Trump started on Tuesday when the former called the One Big Beautiful Bill Act a “disgusting abomination” and asked lawmakers to vote against it. The act is a domestic policy bill backed by Trump.
Trump and Musk then started publicly fighting on Thursday
A couple of days later, the two started publicly taking jabs at one another, with Trump threatening to cut off subsidies to the billionaire’s companies, and Musk responding by saying that the President was ungrateful for the hundreds of millions he poured into his election campaign.
At one point, Musk even claimed Trump was involved in the Epstein files, and called for his impeachment.
