No one likes going to see a doctor on a good day, but when you add surgery into that mix, many grown-ups get scared.
So imagine how little kids must feel when they need surgery and don’t really understand what’s happening or why.

As part of highlighting their favorite things from the previous decade, Akron Children’s Hospital shared the story of Dr. Robert Parry.
Dr. Parry is a pediatric surgeon who has been with the hospital since 2011.
Dr. Parry knows that kids get scared at hospitals.
He also knows that waking up after surgery with a big ugly bandage and stitches doesn’t make children feel much better.
So after the work is done, but before they wake up, Dr. Parry takes a few minutes for arts and crafts.
With a pack of colored Sharpies, Dr. Parry turns the dressings into cartoons and other cute things. That way, instead of seeing scary scars, the kids wake up to find their favorite characters.
Sometimes it’s a total surprise and sometimes he takes requests.
Every time, the kids and parents appreciate how the small gesture makes things less scary and stressful for everyone.
