Television is memorable, but it’s not just our favorite shows that stick with us. In fact, sometimes ads are catchier and stick in our brains more than anything else.
While most of us have nostalgia for certain ads, this woman took her love a step further by getting a tattoo! Would you do that?
We all have those old ads that get stuck in our heads.
Embed from Getty ImagesTV ads really get into your head, especially when watching as a kid. So, most of us have advertisements from our youth that we remember at random times. Some of these ads were really funny or had catchy ringtones.
These commercials can also be reminders of a time when life was simple before all our adult responsibilities.
But, it takes real dedication to get a tattoo of an ad.
While we may remember some ads fondly, getting a tattoo to commemorate is next-level commitment.
A woman on TikTok who posts under the name “old brown sandals” got a tattoo of her favorite ad from the early 2000s, and she posted the video of her new ink on the social media platform.
The tattoo was inspired by an ad many people know.
If you’re a millennial, Gen Xer, or boomer, you probably know the commercial the tattoo is inspired by. The commercials were on many DVDs and TV programs in 2004 to 2007 as part of an anti-piracy campaign.
She got the words from the commercial, “You wouldn’t steal a car,” in the recognizable font. The idea was that people shouldn’t steal intellectual property, just like you shouldn’t steal actual objects.
The original ad was a PSA.
At a time when new technology allowed more and more people to download movies and TV shows illegally, the “Piracy. It’s a crime” series featured things like a group of people copying movies and selling them for profit.
The PSAs were set with dramatic music in the background, which is probably why they are hard to forget.
The commercial has already received the meme treatment.
While the original commercial was meant to discourage people from downloading movies illegally or making copies to sell, the image of a dark background with the words “you wouldn’t steal a car” has been turned into many memes over the years. Some of them make more sense than others.
Variations of the meme include people saying they would steal.
Many people found the ad somewhat funny. So, various memes featuring these PSAs joke about how many people would download a car if they could. The idea is that people don’t feel bad about stealing, as long as they can easily get away with it.
While the ethics of this are murky, it does make for some hilarious memes.
Many people on TikTok love her commercial-inspired tattoo.
The original TikTok video featuring the tattoo now has over 300 thousand likes. The video was part of a current trend where people show that not all tattoos must be meaningful: some can just be funny, random, or even weird.
We’d say her tattoo is definitely a memorable cultural moment though!
Many nostalgic commercials have inspired memes and gifs.
Depending on your age and generation, you may remember ads like “Where’s the Beef?” for Wendy’s, which is featured above, in the ’80s. Or the catchy rap from the Reese’s Puffs ads in the early 2000s.
Many of these commercials have turned into funny memes or gifs.
Would you get a tattoo of a PSA or nostalgic ad?
This particular tattoo is something many adults will remember and even find funny. But most of us wouldn’t take the joke this far. Not that there’s anything wrong with a fun tattoo!
Would you get a tattoo of a favorite ad or funny meme? If so, what would it be from and about?
